Computer Name Change - Auto Request

Hello,

Currently when I turn on my laptop, the "Windows Needs Your Permission" pop-up appears each time, suggesting I want to change the Name of my computer.

This started to happen after un-hiding a load of files in order to find the Apple Crash Log files for my iPod...

I ran virus software etc.. but can't seem to work out what's causing the issues.

Any ideas?

Can't find anything in the info that you posted. Please run the reports that are listed in the link above - that way I'll have everything that I'll need to see if this entry exists in the startups. If not, I can look at the event logs for things running during startup.

Beyond that, you can run Process Monitor at startup - and it'll tell you everything that occurs. The problem is that the log is very, very huge - so the use of filters is necessary.

- x86 (32-bit)
- original installed OS on the system - yes
- an OEM or full retail version - OEM, pre-installed. Although had to re-install following previous corrupt hard-drive 6 months ago.
- What is the age of system (hardware) - 2 years.
- What is the age of OS installation - 6 months installed.

OK, we're gonna have to get a bit more aggressive.
Please download, extract, and run this free application: Autoruns for Windows
Save the output as an .arn file (the default is Autorun.arn), zip it up and upload it here.
If that doesn't work, then we're gonna have to try it with Process Monitor - a real PITA for me!

So, the next step is to run Process Monitor at startup. To do this:
Download, extract, and run Process Monitor ( Process Monitor )
Select the Options menu at the top and the Enable Boot Logging option in that menu. This makes Process Monitor log the next boot process of the operating system.

Restart the computer afterwards and start Process Monitor once the operating system has loaded. You will be asked to save the boot log to a directory on the hard drive. Load that boot log afterwards using [Ctrl O] or File > Open. This is a huge log file - so our next step is to see if you can upload it somewhere that we can get a look at it. If not, post back and we'll see about trimming the logfile down in size.

Ok - ran the Process Monitor. Not sure if I was supposed to wait for it to have loaded all 100% of files when I ran it the first time around, but just selected the "Enable Boot Logging" and restarted it. When I opened it, it asked me if I wanted to save the boot files...

So I now have x 3 files - two of them are approx 245MB and the other is 40MB. Not sure how to share these... Any ideas?

I'll see if I can get someone to look at them (as I have some serious eye issues) - otherwise I'll try to stumble through them myself.

Got the logs downloaded and haven't found anyone to look at them yet.
My eyes are doing a bit better and I hope to take a look at them tonight.

There's something odd with the logs - they are somehow connected and won't open because one of them is corrupted. I tried re-downloading and that didn't fix it.

Instead, let's try a clean boot.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program
Basically what you're doing here is stopping all the 3rd party stuff when the system boots. If the message persists, then we know it's a Windows issue (and that's gonna be difficult to troubleshoot). If it stops the message, then re-enable stuff (in groups of 4 or 5) until it recurs. Then narrow it down to just one and you may have the culprit.

Also, please delete all the logs from Process Monitor.
Then run it once on boot - and stop it from logging immediately after the error message shows up.
I'd like to see what sort of info having just one log will give us.

Hello - I did a clean boot and it came up straight away, so sounds like a windows issue...

Just to give you some more information (which may not be relevant), but I was trying to change my access rights to this laptop i.e. making folders visible etc and it had an error. Afterwards all my desktop and toolbar icons dissapeared, which after un-hiding files made it re-appear, but this is when the problem started - so expect this is related?

If any more problematic, considering doing a new clean install... what do you think?

Did you happen to make a system restore point prior to making these changes?
If so, please try and restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

If that doesn't work, then here's a link to a procedure that'll help restore permissions to default (it's doesn't fix all permissions, but does do most - the details are beyond my ability to understand):

If that doesn't work, then try a clean install:
For testing purposes, it's best to install Windows "clean".
This is, basically, installing it the way that Microsoft intended (using drivers from Windows Update).

Connect the system to the internet
Use DBAN ( DBAN Download | Darik's Boot And Nuke ) or KillDisk ( Active@ Kill Disk. Hard Drives Eraser. Free Download. ) to wipe the drive
Install Windows by booting from the installation DVD
Visit Windows Update and get all updates
Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates)
Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates
Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
Download, install, and update a free antivirus so you don't get infected while testing ( Free AntiVirus ).

If the problems persist, then the problem is most likely with your hardware.

CAVEAT: If you have an Asus motherboard, check the date on the C:\Windows\System32\driver\ASACPI.sys file. 2004/2005 is a problem, 2009,2010 is OK.
