Solved Accessories Issues

Hello all! I recently got rid of a couple nasty viruses that did a number on my system. I've gotten almost everything back to normal. However, I'm having problems with the Accessories folder on my Start Menu.

Calculator and MS Paint were not restored. So, I did what I thought was the simple solution. I created shortcuts for those programs and put them in the folder. I then went to try and rename them, but it would not let me. I think I did this once with an old XP computer I had and was able to...but can't with my Vista computer.

That is my question. How do I rename these? Or, how do I remove these and then restore them the proper way (if that wasn't the proper way)?

I have Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Thank you in advance everyone!

Thank you for the quick response. Unfortunately, that did not work.

Remember, I manually put the files back in, but it will not let me rename or delete them.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Tried that already but it won't let me. It said:

Yard Dog, that is the first thing you told me to try at the top.

I'm sorry. Let me give some clarification real quick. Ok. I've tried the SFC Command, taking ownership, fix it center, and system restore. None of them did the job, however...

...System Restore has never completed. I don't know why it can't be completed, but it always fails to complete.

Now, let me go through this again so that there is no confusion. This is the problem:

1. I had a virus that I got rid of.
2. I got almost everything back the way it was.
3. The two things that were not fixed were that Calculator and MS Paint were not put back into the Accessories folder.
4. I made shortcuts of calc and mspaint from the System32 folder and put them in the Accessories folder.
5. I then tried to rename the files to "Calculator" and "MS Paint" respectively.
6. I was prompted that I didn't have the permissions to do that.
7. I tried to delete them so I could restore them another way.
8. I was prompted that I didn't have the permissions to do that either.
9. I tried all of the stuff posted here.

So, that's were I am now. It seems crazy that something that seems so simple would be this difficult to correct. Anyway, I'm open to any other suggestions. If you all think it's a lost cause, then I can certainly live with it...but I'd rather fix it. Thank you everyone!

I run Malwarebytes everyday. Anyway...I was just about to post again about my issue.

I figured it out. I'm not a computer genius, so I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I was trying to take ownership of the Accessories folder as a whole. I guess you can't do that. So, what I did was try to take ownership of each individual file. That worked and I was able to rename the files. So, I'm good to go. Thank you for all of your help and suggestions. I found a lot of useful tools because of this site. Take care!

Should I run that scan and post the log anyway? Can you figure out why I can't do a System Restore with that information? I would be more than happy to post that if it would help...and very grateful. Let me know if you want me to post that. Thanks!
