Music Files Moving File location automatically

Chronia

Not sure if anyone reads these forums anymore but I am looking for some help on something that Vista seems to do automatically. I was sorting through some music files recently and making copies to a separate folder on my desktop. Vista decided to move each and every file I copied into this folder into it's own folder by artist name on my desktop. I don't want them in individual files listed by artist I want them in the folder I created on my desktop for such a purpose. How do I get it to stop doing this? It's really annoying that it's doing it's own thing instead of what I want it to do.

richc46, I think he's\she's trying to say that Vista is creating it's own folder on the desktop for the pictures, either, in addition to, or, instead of, the folder the user is copying and pasting to. It actually sounds like that, after pasting the files into the desktop folder, Vista is removing them from that folder and putting them into the other folder.

I wonder if Chronia is dragging and dropping or copying and pasting?

This is correct. I am copying and pasting, not dragging and dropping.

Vista does not do that. It might change the sort order but it will not change the location of individual files. It might possibly change the location of all of the files. Are you using iTunes? If so there is an option with in iTunes to allow it to automatically organize the files.

Yes it DOES do that as it is doing that to me. I am not using itunes. I am copying files from one location and pasting them into a folder on my desktop. After a few minutes Vista automatically moves the files from the folder on the desktop I created to a new folder it labels as "Various Artists" and the sorts the files within that folder, removing them from the folder I created and pasted them into.

Please do not say it does not do that as it's not helpful, obviously it does happen to someone if I am posting about it here. I also don't appreciate being told the problem I am having isn't a real problem.

And example of what is happening to me:

Create New folder: c:users/Chronia/Desktop/New Folder
Copy file from location: c:users/Chronia/Music/Ode To Joy - Beethoven.mp3 > right click copy
Paste file into new folder: c:users/Chronia/Desktop/New Folder > right click paste

After a little while vista has rerouted it so New Folder is now empty and Ode To Joy - Beethoven.mp3 is now located here:
c:users/Chronia/Desktop/Various Artists/Beethoven Symphony No. 9/Ode To Joy - Beethoven.mp3

No programs other than Vista's own copy/paste function is being used as you can see from above, so I don't know what's going on or why it's moving my files. Any help on why it's doing this and how to get it to stop?

Before you paste, are you first left clicking on the New Folder icon on the desktop?

How long does it take for Vista to move the files?

I just tested it and Vista hasn't moved the files yet.

Sorry but I don't know believe that Vista itself is moving select files.

My bet is that media player (or some other audio player) is moving the files. Try this: Open media player, click on tools --> options --> player. Un-check add media files to library when played. Now under library click on monitor folders and then advanced. Try un-checking everything and removing everything under monitored folders.

If you use any other audio players try looking in the settings for that program.

In the future you might try to be a little more courteous to those spending their time trying to help you.

I was courteous initially, however I felt you were saying I was a liar when you very bluntly stated that Vista doesn't do that, so in due course I defended myself. I apologize if you felt attacked by my rebuttal. Text can often be misinterpreted, and this is how I interpreted your words in the way they were phrased. Perhaps it was not what you meant, but it was how it came across to me so I apologize for the mixed words between us in this situation. Let's start this on a clean slate.

Thing is no media programs are running when the files movement occurs. It seems to have a random time interval so it is never the same. I only use media player when I do listen files.

I am opening the empty New Folder and right clicking to paste the file so it shows the open folder window.

If I un-check and turn those things off in media when I get new songs won't that mean that media player won't find them though? And if this turns out to be the problem is there a way around my files being moved from where I want them stored on the computer but still have them be automatically detected by media player so I can play them more easily?

I have to agree with Townsbg that it's something in WMP. I was looking in the "more options" for the Library and Synch tabs but didn't anything that should cause this. These options are probably the same ones as in Tools (I don't know where that is in WMP). The only folder I have set as being monitored is C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV.

By the way, Vista still hasn't moved the files that I added to the desktop folder I created last night but we still have to figure this thing out.

Are you on a network where people share files?

Good idea. I suppose we also can't rule out a virus however windows just doesn't move files. It might create/delete system related temp files but nothing else. Not to downplay you situation but that really doesn't make sense.

Try opening up media center and under tasks click on settings and then library setup. Make sure that it isn't watching any folders.

I am using a home network to access the router but none of the computers are connected except both of my own computers, the other two computers in my house have no access to any of my shared folders as I have them set up to require a password to access them.

I've been trying to recreate the issue the last few days myself, even my bf tried to recreate the problem but he couldn't. I'm mightily stumped at this point as to why it did what it did, but I'd still like to figure it out so that it doesn't occur again, even if I can't duplicate it occurring when I try. It seems the issue like to pop up when it wants to and doesn't like to perform for an audience.

I actually don't use Media Center at all, in fact I haven't launched it in months. It has a small applet that runs in the background so my Xbox can see my media file if I want to play them via the Xbox, however, I haven't turned on the Xbox in months either.

I have gone into Media player options and cleared all the monitored folders except the rip folder and the folder where I keep my music which is the c:users/Chronia/Music folder and set it to ONLY monitor that folder.

While doing this I found something interesting. In media player tools>options>player>automatic media information updates for files
There was a check box there, which I have since unchecked "Rearrange music in rip folder, using rip music settings" Don't know if this was the culprit or not. My rip folder for media player is simply set to desktop. The folder I was copying files into was not named "ripped music" or anything of the like, however they are both located on my desktop, so I don't know if this is the issue or not, but I figured it couldn't hurt to uncheck it.

Anything is worth a shot.

It doesn't matter if you use an app or not. If it's set to do things, it's going to do them unless you tell it not to. Technology is great, when it works.

I assume you don't have any other software like Nero, Cyberpower, etc. which have media management. On the other hand, this whole thing sounds like a WMP issue since I don't think that other apps would put the files in a similar folder.

I initially thought of iTunes because it auto-arranges music files by default. It does it first by artist and then there is a sub-folder for each album. Again this is not something that windows does so it must be some other component. I'm leaning towards Media Player and/or Media center. Just because you don't use Media Center doesn't mean that it isn't doing anything because there are processes that by default run all the time. Like Wither said it is possible for some other media software (such as Nero) to do so why is why I asked. Even if you don't use it doesn't mean that it isn't running if it is installed.

When I start my computer the following processes are running as listed in task manager:

atieclxx.exe -
avp.exe*32 - Kaspersky Anti-Virus
brs.exe*32 - brs
csrss.exe -
dwm.exe- Desktop Window Manager
ehmsas.exe - Media Center Media Status Aggregator Service (I usually end this process at startup)
ehtray.exe - Media Center Tray Applet (I usually end this process at startup)
explorer.exe - Windows Explorer
H760.exe - Logitech(c) H760 Wireess Headset
hpsysdrv.exe - hpsysdrv
IAAnotif.exe - Event User Notification Tool
kdb.exe - KBD EXE
taskeng.exe - Task Scheduler Engine
unsecapp.exe - Sink to Recieve asynchronis callbackss for WMI client application
winlogon.exe -

As far a media programs I have installed on my computer goes, there is windows media player, windows media center, itunes, cyberlink dvd suite deluxe 10, Audacity and Reaper. Media player is the only one I run regularly. itunes even when not running in my process window auto-updates itself if there is a newer version of it but it asks me to accept so I know when it is updating, then after it's done I shut down the process in the task manager process tab again. Media Center as shown above has two processes running at start up, those are the two that run so my xbox can see my music (but I don't use my xbox that often so usually end those processes when my computer starts up).

So , what should I try next? Are there settings in any of these programs I should change?

_________________________________________________
UPDATE:

So today, at some point while I was not at my computer another file moved seemingly by itself. This time I wasn't copying or moving any files, it just occurred. For a little while I had media player running on my computer playing music. Then I moved to another room with my netbook and accessed music from my via the network between the two computers (there are no other computers that have access to my pc, just my netbook). The media center processes I listed above were still running however, as silly me forgot to shut them down after posting. So It has to have something to do with one of those 3 things, though when I originally posted I wasn't using my netbook when the files seemingly moved on their own so I don't know if the network has anything to do with it or now, or if it's because I was accessing the music files on my pc using media player on my netbook over the network and the simple fact that media player (no matter where located) was running, might have something to do with it.

My Original question still stands though, what do I try next and what settings in any of the listed media programs should I change settings for if any?

I really don't know what to tell you. However for the services that you kill upon boot up can disabled to prevent them from starting. Hit the windows key and r to bring up the run prompt and then type in services.msc. You must be careful what you stop programs but if you don't know what something is either research it or leave it alone. Most of the programs in that list must run all of the time.

I think that you should disable automatic file control in iTunes even if you aren't using it.

The controls in WMP and WMC will monitor and add folders to the Library, including those on the destop, if you designate. However, whatever is doing this is permanently removing the files from the original folder. Ordinarily, it would just add those files to wherever they are stored within the app. If it creates a new folder with copies of the same files just to organize them, that wouldn't be a problem. I don't know how much of this is done as OLE objects.

I don't have CyberLink installed but it probably has a media organizer that does the same thing as WMP and WMC. However, once again, you wouldn't expect it to move files. Or does it?

I'm not very familiar with using itunes so how do I disable the automatic file control?

I don't use Cyberlink often at all and never use it for music files, so given I don't use it often I wouldn't even know where to begin to look for media organizer, but I can poke around with it. Not sure if it runs in the background on it's own or not either.

As for the msconfig, I tried to do that before, and I'm not sure what I did, I THOUGHT I had only disabled the media center but apparently my system didn't think so. I had to manually reset all the services on my system, because they all got turned off, to default settings (except ones that can't be) by looking it up online using my netbook since my pc at that point couldn't even access the internet. So to be safe I just kill it on startup now, it's not a big deal as it's now become habit, but thanks for the suggestion :)

To check for program effects, when you start msconfig.exe, under Services, you hide the microsoft services by checking the box and then disable all other services. Under Startup, you just disable all services. Then reboot. Check to see if the problem still occurs. You can then re-enable them piecemeal until you find the one that's causing the problem, if the problem doesn't occur using the above procedure.

Let us know about cyberlink.
