System repair and System Restore every morning.

Hello.

I would appreciate some advice on what to next please. I can muddle my way through on the computer so will try to be as clear as I can.

I have an HP desktop computer running Windows Vista 32bit and my security is Avast free. For the past two weeks when I start the computer I get a black screen which then does a system repair then a system restore and only then can I get to the log-in page. Today I started in safe mode tried to do a system restore but the Microsoft system recovery page popped up so I gave up. I have done a full scan with Malaware Bytes which was clear and done a disk check which showed no problems.

I have stopped Windows updates in case they are causing the problem so I'm now at a a loss as to what to try next.

Thank you.

Poppygran.

Welcome
Hopefully, your problem is limited to software, if so, we may be able to fix it. Lets start with an SFC scan, if errors are found, run 3 times. If you still have unrepaired errors post back for the next step.

Good morning.

I ran the SFC scan three times and corrupted files were found and repaired. I thought that would be the end of the problem but again on start up today it went to System repair and System Restore which I have had to do to get on here at all. Any suggestions please?

Have you recently made changes to the computer; addeded software etc?
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes (the free version)
If that does not help
Boot the computer in safe mode several times and see if the problem persists. If it does you most likely have a hardware problem. I am thinking hard drive.

Rich thank you. I have downloaded and scanned with Optimizer Pro which your link led me to and it's saying it detected 1213 items to clean and optimize but then it's asking for a registry key which I don't have.

My link should have taken you to the free crystal disc. Disregard anything that you are asked for.
There are several download links on that page, you have to read carefully what is downloaded for each.
With a system restore, go back prior to your download.
If you do not have a restore point that you can use, revo uninstaller will remove that crap. Use the free version

Rich I've downloaded the above and I assume it has obtained the info you want so what is my next step?

My Computer

Its very easy.
If you can go back prior to Optimizer, with system restore, do that.
If you cannot, use revo to uninstall that crap.
Then, after optimizer is gone, use the crystal link to download crystal. Its great software, I use it too.
In your case it will tell you if you have a hard drive problem.
If all that is done and you have used Crystal, send us a screen shot.

Well the screen shot did not come through. The only one I need is Crystal. Perhaps it would be easier if you describe it to me.
Do you have any warnings, what is the final summary (warning etc)?

TY John for your assistance.
The screen shot came out very good. Could you please send a shot of the top portion, too. It will give a summary. It will say something like satisifactory, or warning etc.

OK, the good news is that your hard drive is fine. The bad news is that we still have to determine the cause.
Did you try a few times in safe mode to determine if the problem is still present?

Rich I didn't try in safe mode as when I switched on after a 3 hour break today it started perfectly which it sometimes does during the day (not always.) It's always when I first try to boot up in the mornings that it happens so I'll know tomorrow morning and then I'll go into safe mode and do what you suggest. What I did do today was to uninstall Avast, install my windows updates then reinstall Avast to see if that will help.

My Computer

If you can boot in safe mode, and it is consistent, this tells us that it is a hardware problem.
It would be to your benefit, if it does not boot in safe mode, since we can fix it from here.
If it is hardware, then the most we can to is try to determine the cause and then its up to you.
Ill look for your posts tomorrow.
