Hi,
I hope somebody could help me with my resolution problem.
vista home premium 64bit and navidia GeForce 8500GT
Everything was fine up to yesterday evening. Now the highest resolution I can
choose is 1024X768. No option to go any higher. I have not changed anything but
the automatic update in vista did download new updates at the same time yesterday. Now my screen is streched and fuzzy.
Really annoying.
Thanx

Reinstall your graphics drivers or restore to a previous time from the update. Check the monitor setting in device manager.

OK, I uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers and after the reboot the screen would not come on at all. I had to uninstall drivers in safe mode to get the screen working again. Without the card drivers the resolution options are back to normal.
Before I unistalled the drivers, windows would load up but before the desktop could load the monitor said it did not receive a signal and went into standby mode.
As the screen is working fine without the driver I presume it has got to be to do with the graphics card? All was working fine though for the first couple of weeks.
I did check for updates before uninstall and the system told me the drivers were up to date.
Sorry, am really not very good at these more complicated things.
Any ideas???

Hi Dwarf
I reinstalled the drivers and updated with the lates one but it did not sort out the problem. I then rolled back the driver but I could only do it once (new computer) and it still does not work. The only difference was that in safe mode the resolution was fine when before it was bad as well but I don't know whether that is significant. I have disabled the card now and the resolution is fine.
I don't understand why it stopped working in the first place as I did not update the driver at all.

Hi sabcully,

It is a known Nvidia problem.
I can give you a modified inf file if you give the following infos:
Drivers version you want to install
Monitor model you use.
If your machine is a laptop, laptop model.

My Computer

Hi
I have only installed the drivers that came with the card and downloaded the lates from the navidia website. Sorry to be vague but am totally out of my depth with this as never had to deal with this.
My monitor is a CHIMEI CMV223D.
Desktop, 4 Quad Q9300, 8192 Corsair DDR2.
Thanx for all your help.

this weekend HP pushed an NVIDIA "Security Patch". When it was done, my Display Adapter defaulted to "Standard VGA Adapter" and nother I could do, including reloading original NVIDIA driver helped.

Finally, I had an epiphany and remembered that Vista let you easily restore from a checkpoint and failed back to Friday morning last week. That restored my monitor and adapter however now caused a real annoying problem.

So SABCULLY, you need to restore to prior to the update. None of the steps that are given here will help, I went thru them all including thinking something with card seating etc. But, it is purely the driver and now you likely are at the Standard VGA Adapter which limits you to the 1024 X 768 resolution.

I cannot click on any hotlink and go to the site. When I click a link, Explorer opens but sites there. If I am on a page, like this forum, and click a link, it opens a new tab but just sits there blank till I close it. But, and this was odd to me, the blank window it opens is active meaning that if I type an address into the address bar it works.
Wierd, got any clues?

Quad Q9300
NVIDIA 8800GT
4GB RAM
Vista Home Premium (64 Bit)

Thanks
Tim

One more thought that made this problem truly frustrating is that when you try to relad the original driver, it looks like everything is OK and then you reboot, it finds the video card and says to reboot again, then you are back to the Standard VGA thing.

I went round and round with this a few times yesterday convinced I must be doing something wrong. But it wasn't me.

Have a look in devices manager if your monotor is recognize as CHIMEI or plug and play.

Thanx KyColonelT
This is going to cause me a problem cos I had stuff done to the computer to get my internet sorted out at last and restoring will undo that too.
Not sure what to do about that.
HP, should have known.
Ta again.

My Computer

Hi everybody,
you would not believe it. Been hunting around for the solution for days now. Have come across this in all sorts of places, people think its the monitor, CHIMEI, others think it is vista and others the nvidia software. Probably a bit of all.
THE SOLUTION:
Install the latest driver for card, switch off computer, unplug DVI cable and power from monitor, wait a few minutes, switch computer back on and: Your monitor and graphics card is working fine together.
This has worked for a lot of people and for me too. Such a frustrating problem with such an easy answer. Hope it will keep working. My monitor has turned up in the device manager again as well now.

Thanx for all your help!
:-)

My Computer

Glad it works!
But (i always say there is a but) maybe the problem will come back.
Is the monitor recognized as Chimei or plug an play?

My Computer

Well, that is what i thought and maybe your problem came from the monitor.
Now it is recognized, update the monitor drivers with the drivers which came with it.

My Computer

Sid,
been looking for Chimei drivers but have not been able to find any. Have found out though that the 'no signal' problem is not exclusive to CHIMEI monitors.
Will have another go.
Thanx a lot. :-)
