Display off to the left

hi,
this is kinda hard to explain but here goes.

When starting up Vista, my display is always off to the left of the screen, meaning my start button is way off the screen and there's a black space on the right, like the display has simply been moved 2 inches to the left.
I can fix it, by entering NVIDIA Control Panel and switch connector: back and forth between HDMI-HDTV (audio disabled) and HDMI - HDTV (audio enabled).
but if the pc enters sleep or I reboot the problem is back.

Now I know the general problem because I had it with xp also, seems my monitor likes to tell my pc that it's a tv (I'm sorry I'm not into the tech lingo). And I've fixed it previously by changing codes in .ini files and ect. but I'd rather not do it on a new crisp clean first time install of Vista, anyone know of this problem and how to fix it for good?

Card is NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX
monitor is a LG Flatron

Hi Iceshard and welcome to the forums :party:

Can you follow these steps for me please:

1. Open the start menu
2. In the search box, type Device Manager
3. Click on device manager
4. Click Ok on the UAC prompt
5. Expand the display adapters category
6. Right click on NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX and select Update Driver Software...

Let me know if this has any effect

EDIT: Are you running 64 bit windows or 32 bit?

thanks for the fast reply and the welcome, I have the latest driver for my card, but I did as you asked anyways.. Vista stated I allready have the optimal driver installed.
I'm running 64 bit

Your driver may have corrupted or something then, download and install the driver:

NVIDIA DRIVERS 257.21 WHQL

I think thats it, double check just in case though.

Hmm, thats odd.

Lets try a different approach:

1. Open the start menu
2. Type cmd in the search box
3. Right click on Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator
4. In command prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

Let it run, and let us know how it goes.

Try as Tom says, but this is a very rare occurrence, because resetting the adapter sorts the problem (changing the display modes resets the adapter) Can you please tell me what happens to your screen when you boot into Safe Mode?

Starting in safe mode, and the display shows fine, to a noob like me verifying that it's a driver issue?

Run the sfc command twice more, because sometimes it can't repair it on the first time round.

Keep doing as Tom says, just follow my advice at the same time. What audio solution do you have? Are your speakers integrated into your monitor?

All right, did the things above ran the scan twice more with the same result, entered msconfig and did as discribed but still nothing I'm affraid.

Are you using the generic monitor driver, or the driver specific to the monitor? Note that this is not the same as the graphics driver and, although it isn't a driver as such it is still commonly referred to as one. Instead, it is more of an information file which informs your system of the capabilities of your monitor, including timing and phase at the various supported resolutions.

ok this is new stuff to me.. I'm sorry I cannot tell you if I'm using the generic monitor driver. all I can tell you is that i've never screwed around with it in the first place.. ever, for what it's worth.

my full model nr. is LG Flatron L245WP-BN
