display driver

Hello everyone, I'm new, lol. I'm using my droid eris to type here so please forgive my lack of anything. My puter recently quit on me all together due to "display driver nvd....". Is there any way to restore it? All I can tell you is that I'm running Vista home basic. I can't remember any other info on it, however, its just a home made job a friend put together for me. Thank you in advance for any help.

Does it not boot?

I'd run it in safe mode, uninstall the video card. reboot to normal mode and let windows reinstall it.

Then go to nvidia, use the scanner and d/l the newest driver for it.

Hello Patonb, I thought about that, but it won't boot. I may try again just for good measure. My fault though, I should have sought advice earlier. Thanks for the info.

My Computer

You could try to take the card out and put it back in... reseating it sometimes helps.

Thanks again. As I type this, I am pulling the card out and see that its a GeForce 7600 GT. It's dusty, so after a quick vacuum, I'll re-install it and see what happens.

My Computer

Okay... As its not booting, it could be a different issue and not fully the card.

What are your system specs? And what exactly happens when you boot?

If you got some fiddling time, we can try to narrow things down.

I'd really like to know the power supply moidel, or atleast size and the amps on all 12V, as listed on the sticker on the power supply, aka psu.

It doesn't do anything at all. The screen says "no signal" then it goes black and that's it. I will disassemble again when I get home and write down some specs for you and we'll go from there. I appreciate the time you're taking to help me.

side note: my boss gave me a computer to take home and use. Hopefully it works and I can use it instead of my phone for a while.

My Computer

Yha........ no boot is not just a gpu issue.

It might be your power supply poped, caused a driver crash.

How techy are you? theres ways to test your power supply, but you need a multi meter.

Well, I'm a small bit techy, but not much. The thing is, if step-by-step instructions are given to me, I can easily complete a task. I feel that if I had fixed it before it stopped booting I'd de ok, but nonetheless... I don't have a meter, any other steps I can take?

Other than swapping out a new psu, not overly.

/if it was just your video card, the rest of your system would still sorta boot.

Using a multimeter would instantly find if the psu is borked.

You can try unpluging your psu from your parts, but leave a fan or 2 connected. Then jumper the psu so as to allow the psu to turn on, and see if it will power a fan.

How to jump the psu: How To: Jump Start A Power Supply (PSU) / Test A Power Supply And Components - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

Try that, just ensure its nthe green and a black plug or boom!

I went to the thread and this procedure seems simple enough. I will try it and see what happens. This system I am borrowing works ok which is a big relief. At least I have something other than my wonderful phone, lol.

haga yha surfing for porn on your phones just wrong... unless you like small things.

This will deffinately see if your psu can power up.

Okay, I have finally got off my ass and tried the jumper method for the power supply. It doesn't do anything.

But as far as the video card, are these little silver components supposed to be split open like this?

Oh wow, nope, that's not good. Blown capacitors on a card are not good. Either way, i'd say you need at LEAST a new card. Not too much outside of design and age(or poor quality capacitors) would cause that.

If nothing is found wrong other than the card, i'd suggest just replacing it, and you should be good to go.

EDIT: sorry for hijacking....I had an Nvidia card that had one of these go bad.

First thing is, we need to know more about what you use your pc for. Do you play a lot of games on it? Or is it just for normal home use.

That's not a really bad card, but you want to make sure you get something strong enough, and made for what you do on your pc. I've never been big on video cards without a fan on them. If you do graphically intense things with your pc, it can get pretty hot.
