Laptop to LCD TV not working

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help, I have a Samsung laptop (details below) with a HDMI port and I recently purchased a 32" BUSH LCD TV and a Belkin HDMI cable. When I connect the Laptop to the TV via the HDMI cable nothing happens :/ . It works fine when I connect using a VGA cable but neither the laptop nor the TV show any sign of recognising the other when connected by HDMI cable.

Below I have listed the full spec of the laptop and TV, if anyone requires any more information I'd be happy to provide it.

Kind Regards

Liam

Hi Liam, have you tried pressing the FN key and F4 at the same time while the tv is connected to the laptop? This combination of buttons basically tells the laptop that you want to use an external display, if it doesn't work then you may need to check in the intel graphics properties (right click desktop and select graphics options) and see if the HDMI needs to be enabled, hope this helps and post back if you need more help.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me, ok so here's what I've tried in the last 24hrs;

1: searched for HDMI settings on the laptop every where I could think of, doesnt seem to have any (even though it definitely has a HDMI port)

2: I installed the latest version of the graphics card SW/ driver still no joy and no HDMI settings that I can see either.

3: I've also tried in control panel personalise and to the left connect to a projector or other external display. It detects when I connect by VGA but not by HDMI.

4: I tried shutting down the LT and the TV then connecting the two booting the LT and then the TV, still no joy.

5: I've never used the HDMI port so checked it for dust and dirt (seems fine)

6: I've tried every combination of port on the TV in case some how they were labelled incorrectly, again no joy.

It's odd when I plug the HDMI cable in nothing happens on the TV or LT, the laptop just does nothing, when I use the F keys to get it to switch display it only shows my main display to switch to.

Hope you can help : )

On my TV, if I want to use HDMI, I have to go to it's display menu and select it. Did you do that?

But yeah I've tried selecting the the HDMI input I've even tried every combination of input on the TV and input port, in case they were labelled incorrectly in the factory.

Hi YD,

I think that is definitely worth checking, I only have the one cable but I will take back and get it exchanged. I will keep you posted, thanks for your free helpful help ;)

One question, should there be some menu on the laptop for HDMI settings? I can't seem to find anything relating to HDMI port anywhere on the laptop :/

This is where it gets tricky, lately , have been quite a few HDMI issues posted, Audio Manager issues with not having HDMI as default for sound, but, as far as your graphics, seems to me that since it works with VGA cables pretty much auto , it would seem that using HDMI would also pretty much do the same , right ? I am not the Forum Expert on this issue, just suggesting, that even tho the cable is brand new, it still could be at fault. I say that because of studies have shown SATA cables will vary on functionality although they can be brand new.

My next step is definitely to try a replacement cable, I will get one tomorrow and post back tomorrow evening with the results. I think your right to assume that HDMI is controlled automatically the same way as VGA.

I'll let you know how it goes with another HDMI cable.

Thanks for your advice :)

Hi, no you did not upset me, I'm not ungrateful for your post quite the opposite in fact, but, in my earlier posts I have stated that I have tried the function keys. With the help of Yard Dog the next thing I'm going to check is that it's not a faulty HDMI cable.

PS

Thanks for the E-Guide I'm sure it will come in handy in the future :)

Kind regards

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay took a while for me to get out to Argos, I got the HDMI cable replaced today for another new one. Still the same problem though, nothing happening at all when I connect to the TV, :/ Its also a brand new TV is it likely to be a fault with the TV or the HDMI port on the Laptop?

Hi YD,

Thanks for your quick reply, lotties post is by far the best guide to using the HDMI function that I've seen, looks like it will come in handy for other features on the laptop in future.

Just to make sure I tried everything suggested in the guide when connecting my LT to the TV with the old cable and the new cable, still no joy.

From the beginning I've been trying the F key functions as I was used to using them when I connected to the TV by VGA but when I try to connect by HDMI and use the F keys it just brings up the laptop display.

Usually when I plug the VGA cable in the screen flickers and then the display shows up on the TV automatically. When I plug the HDMI cable in though the screen doesnt flicker, and theres no other type of response from the laptop to show that it has a new connection i.e, no beep (not that a beep is normal), no timmer (to show it processing), no screen flicker nothing :/

I'm stumped :(

My Computer

Hi,

Try the Laptop on a different TV & the TV with a different HDMI source (Sky or DVD/ Bruray player).

What happens then?
