Vista cannot connect to a server via http

Hello,

I want to connect to a Team Foundation Server through HTTP. I am not in the network (local nor VPN) with the server I want to connect to. I use the public IP of the server.​

From my laptop with XP it can be reached easily - for example when I enter the http://serverIP:9200 in the Internet Explorer, the browser asks me for a password and if I fail to log it shows that the Access is denied.
9200 is a port number.​

When I connect a laptop with Vista and do the same, a browser just informs that it cannot display the page. I can't also connect to the server via telnet. The behaviour is the same also when I turn off the firewall on Vista (on XP I do not need to turn off the firewall). What then can be blocking this connection?? Are there any security settings that I should check?​

There is no problem to connect to the Web server from the same network as this TFS.​

I would be very thankful for some help or suggestions.​

Hi Polo,


Thats nothing todo with Vista because thats a website your trying to load, Contact that server administrator for infomation about adding your Vista PC into the access list before your allowed to connect using the Vista pc ;)

Steven - thank you for your reply.

But my XP laptop was never used with this server before. I just tried to connect from it yesterday and it worked. The administrator rather could not add XP PC to the access list, because he did not even know about its existence.

OK - a question: what do you mean by adding a PC to the access list? Do you mean the IP? If yes - I do not have a fixed IP here and I think the server is public to any IP: I asked some colleagues who had nothing to do with this server to connect from their XP PCs and they succeeded.

Another colleague, who has the same Vista PC as me, also cannot connect.
But one more colleague has vista and he succeeded... but I suppose he has a Home edition, and not Enterprise as me - but I need to verify it...

Well... that's why I think it is on my laptop's configuration side (but I will verify this issue of access list with my administrator).
So... I still need help... maybe it is just a simple setting which I am not aware of...

Hi Luckypolo,

you said you were accessing you server using HTTP try make sure that. your I E security settings permit you to access the web site. also check to see on your IP address setting whether your DNS is correct. also check in control panel under user accounts to see if the Manage Passwords whether there are any passwords already stored if so delete them and try.

I connected via http.
I do not really know what kind of IE security setting I shoud check...
I have removed the passwords.
My IP and DNS are set automatically. I connect via ADSL modem and the same settings are on my XP laptop. I just unplug modem's USB cable from one laptop and plug it to the other...
oh - my collegue, who succeeded to connect with Vista, has the Ultimate edition... if it matters...

Maybe this will be helpful information:
I tried also with telnet: telnet server_IP 9200

On XP PC - it connects to the server.
On Vista - NO CONNECTION.

Any ideas?

I dont know why it wouldn't connect unless you dont have SP1, have some sort of spyware, ISP having DNS issues or you have set something else wrong... Its isolated to your machine so I would do some spyware scans with Spybot S+D and also check your proxy settings havnt been changed :confused:

I have SP1, I scanned with Spybot S&D, everything seems to be clean. DNS - but I am using an IP address - is it DNS involved then?

I have tried with no firewall and no antivirus installed. :mad: Still no connection.

Is there any setting in Vista which does not allow to connect to IP address if it does not have URL defined?? - my colegue has set another server, in different location, but with the same port and I could connect to it. So there is no problem with blocking the port by my software.

Can the TCP packets sent be constructed differently on Vista than on XP?

I'm by no means no expert in this area but don;t you connect to a Server via ftp:// rather than http://?

Http: is for web browsing a page on a server... ftp:// is for connecting to a server to edit web-pages, upload pics etc etc

Well. We found the solution: the administrator changed the port number on the server's firewall (or router or whatever it is called ;)) and now it works.

However, I have no idea what kind of restrictions were there on the server that it connected from XP and did not want to from Vista. If I know the answer I will post it here. Some were suggesting some issues with IPv6, but I have it disabled for my Internet connection.

Clevo - I do want to connect via http, as this protocol is used by the Team Foundation Server. Through http you can also connect to different "web applications"/"web services": The server may respond with some data, and not necessarily with a Web page (some HTML stuff). But you are right, the http servers mostly replies with Web pages, as this is what the protocol was intended for (hyper text).

And, for more information, No, Clevo, HTTP:// is also valid for connecting to a server. You normally do not see a port number because the default port for HTTP is 80, and thus

- that port is assumed.

However, if you need to bypass firewalls, or if that administrator has setup the web server to serve pages on a different port, then you need to specify the port number, as luckypolo has to.
