Keeps identifying to network

Hi

I've just bought a new laptop with windows Vista pre-installed. Now I want to connect to our wireless network. This works, but just local. Whenever I connect to our network it first identifies to the local network, which works. But after that he can't connect to the internet.

PC --------------- IDENTIFYING.... -----------X---------- Internet

That is how it looks in the networkcentre..

Anyone knows this problem or knows how this can be fixed? Under here there's how it looks like, it's dutch lol, but you probably can figure out what is what.

alleen lokaal = only local
inschakelen = turn on
uitschakelen = turn off
Identificeren.. = Indentifying

Thanks in advance, Luuk

Re: Keeps identifying to network

Hi w1nx, and welcome to the Vista Forums

First thing I would check is the WEP/WEP2 key if this is incorrect the system will still connect to the network but not connect to the internet.

What I have found to work in the past with regard to not identifying the network is to re-start the "Network List Service" (netprofm) once you have the network set to either public or private (as you want) you should get Internet access.

What happens if you click on the red cross to start the diagnostics?

The key is correct.

How do I do that, and where?

He will give the standard procedures:
- Plug in a cable to the network adapter (Same problem)
- Move the laptop somewhere else to see if there is connection (Which doesn't work)

Re: Keeps identifying to network

To restart the service type services.msc into the start search bar and run the program scroll down to the entry and select restart.

From the diagnostics you are describing it would appear that windows is having a problem finding the wireless network signal. you could try to connect when closer to the router, in the available networks it should give a signal strength - is this at good or better?

Ok can you open a command prompt (run cmd.exe from the start search)

in the command window type ipconfig copy the output and paste into a post here

Re: Keeps identifying to network

Ok

That tells me that the pc is not getting an IP address from the router but is defaulting to the MS fallback address.

You need to check the IPv4 settings for the adaptor

from Network and sharing centre

select Change adaptor settings

double click on your wireless adaptor to open it

Select properties and then double click on the Internet Protocol v4 item to open the properties.

you should now see this dialogue (or similar)

ipv4-settings.jpg

Make sure that the items marked in yellow are selected.

if this is the case and you still cannot connect then there is probably some issue with the router, which will probably need hands on access to resolve or at least full details of make and model
