Intel or AMD?

Hi everybody!
I m looking to buy a new desktop as i m now fed up with my compaq laptop.
I was wondering which combination would be better?
1: Intel Motherboard and Processor with Nvidia Graphics Card?
2: AMD Motherboard and Processor with ATI Graphics Card?
Please comment as per your experience and satisfaction.:D

3. Intel mobo and CPU with ATI gpu
4. AMD mobo and CPU with nVidia gpu...

CPU brand makes no difference when it comes to GPU support.

That said, go for an Intel CPU. Higher overclocks, lower temps, more aftermarket cooling options, WAY more benchmarks and overall just better (but I am bias as hell)

Like most things, it's down to personal preference, but on paper, Intel is the choice to go for.

I use an AMD processor and have no problems with it. If people choose Intel or AMD, then that's their choice. No processor is perfect, and each has its advantages and disadvantages.
What I would say though, regarding graphics cards, is that you are better off pairing an NVidia card with a motherboard based on an NVidia chipset and an ATI card on models based on an AMD chipset. Motherboards are available from both camps for both Intel and AMD processors.

Thanks for the replies. i will go for intel. i had intel on all of my previous computers and it never faced any issues. i m going in for an intel 965 mobo with q6600 processor. i will add a ATI HD 3450 or HD 3650 with 4 GB RAM.

For a bit extra you could get a 4650, which would be better. The Q6600 his fine, and with the 4GB RAM, should have a nice PC

What ever was in it when I buy it. I have no preference.

I know you have made your choice, but I would strongly echo the words of those who said Intel, I used to have an AMD and was not overly happy with it, also had an ATI card and was unlucky in that it broke down after a very short while, 6 months I think, and it was a devil of a performance to get a new one, as the broken one had to go back to be tested and ok'd before a new one was granted and when I did get it, that one lasted a year and that was it.

That said, you might if you wanted to go that way have been fine with no problems at all :D

Since going back to Intel and Nvidia, I have been very very happy, and I am sure you will be too

But i have heard that Nvidia drivers are not compatible with vista and are the major cause of Vista Failures. Is it true?

no, most crashes are actually caused by user input being wrong, or its most commonly known as "Fiddling".
crashes have been down to Nvidia drivers but a fix usually comes out within days, ATi/AMD dont have such a supportive driver development team.

so if i understand you correctly, Nvidia is better than ATI?

Decide what you want to do with the PC first. Game or Video...etc... If you mostly game then check the games you really prefer as they will be better with one over the other when it comes to Mobo's and Video cards. I mainly use my Intel i7 and Gigabyte Mobo for my home theater system. I also have an AMD that I like just as much. It is simply a matter of personal preferance and one is not better then the other in my eyes. Even the new AMD is labeled as a number 920 and 940. Either way you look at it, buy the time this thread is done there will be a new CPU better then either one right now! Go for what is best to fit your cost. As far as Video cards, I run the 3870x2 due to getting two of them for $300 on ebay. Just a note, check your Power supply for the correct configuration to match the card as the bigger cards run a 6 pin and 8 pin. Some of the lower power supplies do not allow for this configuration ( just to save you some headache ) Right now the cost is great due to the economy.

...... buy yourself a HD3650 or an 8400gs, if you don't want to game the 2 cards above will deliver excellent video playback....

If you are planning on mainly video then I prefer the Intel as the Blue Ray picture is smoother to me then what I saw with the AMD. That is why I built this new system. There are a lot of things to consider before you invest in building the system. I think that would require a new thread as it would tend to lead way off the subject at hand here. If you can do it go for the i7 Intel with the X58 chipset and as far as Video cards, I just tend to lean toward ATI. This is just me and you should decide what is best for you.

umm...... yes ok blue ray............ if you want to spend a grand more sure go with intel
but for about $1000 you can have a heck of a amd system
