iTunes Registry Error

I've done a search on here but can't seem to find someone with the same problem, so please pardon this if it's a duplicate.

Up until a few days ago iTunes worked fine on my computer. Then I installed the new version 8 and now I get the following error:

"The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."

I have gone onto the Apple forums to see if anyone was having a similar problem, and have followed the advice of others to try to fix the problem. Nothing has worked.

I've done the following: Gone into registry settings to delete the Upper and Lower filters but they don't exist where they are supposed to be. I've done a complete uninstall of everything Apple following instructions found on their website, and then reinstalled, but that didn't help. I installed a GEAR driver, but that also didn't help. I searched for updates on my CD/DVD drive and it said they were up to date.

Now it seems that my computer isn't recognizing the CD drive at all and the warranty on my laptop expired 5 days ago.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

After doing the registry settings, uninstalling and re-installing iTunes and installing the Gearworks (or whatever iTunes uses), it all came down to one simple process....
(Vista Ultimate x64)
Go to the Uninstall Window. Select iTunes. Click the repair button.
All that research came from a simple tool already in front of us! Duh-uh!

try to reinstall itunes on a new administrator account

I'm having the same trouble! Any help would be appreciated. Here are the specs on my problem:

I have Windows XP Professional.

My burner is a TSST Corp. DVD+RW TS-L632D (8X). Firmware is up to date.

I tried to burn a 16X Memorex DVD+R to create a ProShow Gold slideshow. Couldn't burn it.

I downloaded and ran a "cdgone" file from someone in a forum. That fixed the problem. I was able to burn my slideshow.

HOWEVER, now I get an error message in iTunes saying, "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for improting and burning CDs and DVDs are missing."

Not only iTunes, but my computer and Roxio 9 doesn't recognize my burner anymore.

Tried removing and reinstalling iTunes many times. No go.

Removed and reinstalled Roxio. Now Roxio and my computer recognizes the burner. Only iTunes remains a problem.

Apple has a manual registry fix which includes modifying the upper and lower filters in the registry. BUT I didn't have upper and lower filters anymore. I added them to the registry. performed Apple's fix. That still didn't work.

Found another fix for iTunes to add gearaspiwdm to the registry. That not only didn't work, but my computer wouldn't start and had to be opened with the previous configuration. I have the gearaspi driver in my computer.

I'm not advanced enough to play around with the registry without help. HELP, please!

Do you have any idea how to fix this?

I have the exact same problem and in addition the CD Drive is EXTREMELY slow and when it does play it skips and has pauses (20min to play a 3 min song). I too have tried everything mentioned above as well as uninstalling the CD Drive, Updating the registry, cleaning the drive, and doing the repair thing. Please help! Running Windows Vista Home Premium, Itunes 8.0.2.20, CD rom is ATAPI DVD W DH16W1P ATA device.

This sounds awful but I'm glad there are others out there with the same problem. My husband thinks I'm just messing with the computer unnecessarily. Hah!

I have also tried a system restore on the computer, but every attempt has been unsuccessful. I've even tried it in safe mode with a different administrator.

How frustrating.

My Computer

I figured out the problem without a reply. So I hope this helps you too, Gail.

I uninstalled all my CD burning software (iTunes, Proshow Gold, Roxio).
Restarted.
I merged the CDGONE file into my registry. You can file this file online by googling.
Restarted.
Then I ran "regedit" and locate this string in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROL\CLASS{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Within this key I created a multi-string value named "upperfilters". Then I double-clicked it to add this text: GEARAspiWDM with a carriage return.
Restarted.
I installed iTunes.
Restarted.
That fixed iTunes and the drive.
I installed Roxio 9. Still got "no drive detected."
I installed this file that I found online: Pxengine2_08_40d.exe
Restarted.
Now iTunes, the drive, and Roxio work.
I installed Proshow Gold. No problems. All fixed.

I didn't figure this out by myself. I researched many sites and forums and by process of trial and error this worked for me.

Good luck to all with a similar problem.

Reinstall itunes and then restart the computer| Now, browse thru c:\windows\system32 and rename the afs.sys file to afs.txt and restart the system| Issue resolved! ! ! ;)

hi, just want to share with everyone, those who installed itune and seeing the errors read dvd/cd registry problems, I have the same problem like many of you and finally what I did was re-installed the original driver and it solve all the problems. No need to download anything or edit your registry at all. Try this it should work fine.

Hi dinesh, your original cd/dvd driver came with your pc, just re-installed the dirver will change the registry by itself, you don't have to do snything more. hope this will explained and good luck. :)

My Computer

Okay, I have had the same problem in Vista Ultimate x32, and couple times of re-installing iTunes - no success.
So, I have checked the device manager and noticed that the DVD/CD drives category has disappeared even though I was able to use all my programmes with the drive.
There are two solutions.
First, which I have NOT used, remove/re-install your DVD/CD drive.
Second, I have compared my Dell D830 registry settings with IBM Lenovo T60P registry settings, and there are almost the same regarding the DVD/CD drive.

Before doing anything create a copy of the registry of yours, but only the branch, starting
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
--> BEWARE!!! CHECK if the entire ID is exactly the SAME before doing anything, otherwise use the ID of your save registry copy. <--

Another note! ;)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000]
There are different numbers possible starting with 0000, 0001, ... These are numbers related to firmware changes and will count further. So check the registry of your last number and make the appropriate changes in the <NEW>.reg.

Copy the settings below into a <NEW>.reg file, and you will be able to see the category again, and then you can go from there.

Explanation to:
1. Upperfilter = GEARAspiWDM (please delete the setting (entire line) in the NEW.reg file before applying if you have already something in the already in the settings of yours, but I would recommend to keep it).

2. Lowerfilter = AnyDVD (please delete the setting (entire line) in the NEW.reg file before applying if you have already something in the already in the settings of yours, depending on your last installed application).

I know what to do now, I have tried it myself and it actually works !!!!!!!!!!

Registry - Help

Make sure you have iTunes installed (and if you unistalled the Gear Driver, reinstall it !)
(Google search Gear Driver: Website: Driver updates - GEAR Software)
Go to the Registry (Start->Run->Regedit.exe) and look for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Curren
Right click in the right section and select "New->Multi-String Value". Name it "UpperFilters".
Right click on it and select "Modify" Enter "GEARAspiWDM" Press enter to move to the next line
and click ok. Into the "Value Date". Restart and there you go it should be fixed. If not also
try to make a "LowerFilters" and leave it blank.

My Computer

I had the same problem as you. I have the instructions on how to make iTunes work properly. Please follow the instructions !

Make sure you have iTunes installed (and if you unistalled the Gear Driver, reinstall it !)
Click on Run or type in regedit (Windows Vista Start Search)
Type regedit and click OK.
Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand the tree.
Click the plus sign next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign next to Control.
Click the plus sign next to Class.
Click to select the heading that begins {4D36E965- (don't click the plus sign here).
Right click in the right section or right click on 4D36E965 ! and select "New->Multi-String Value". Name it "UpperFilters".
Right click on it and select "Modify" Enter "GEARAspiWDM" Press enter to move to the next line
and click ok. Into the "Value Date". Restart your computer, and there you go, it should be fixed. If not also
try to make a "LowerFilters" and leave it blank.

Hope this helps you all who had the same problem as me.
