Has anyone succeeded in restoring an ERUNT backup?

I have Vista Home Premium.

Has anyone succeeded in restoring an ERUNT backup in Vista? If so, I would be grateful for some help.

I've tried several sets of instructions from various web sites, so please do not send me any links unless you have actually tried the instructions yourself, and succeeded.

I think I have tried every combination of:

a) Using the Administrator account.

b) Using my own account, which has administrator privileges.

c) Not selecting "Run as administrator"

d) Selecting "Run as administrator"

e) Backing up to the "Windows" folder.

f) Backing up to anywhere except the "Windows" folder.

g) Using the command line.

Here is a new question.

My laptop has only two accounts:

1) Administrator

2) Me (as administrator)

Will the registry entries for both of these users be backed up? Or do I need to backup from the Administrator account, then back up from my own account?

Here is another question.

Who is the "current user"? Is it me when I'm in my own account, and Administrator when I'm in the Administrator account. The purpose of these questions is to determine: is the backup made by "Administrator" identical to the backup made by "me"?

I have succeeded in making many backups both as me and as Administrator. I have succeeded in restoring backups made by "me", but *never* by Administrator. I am worried that a backup that is restored by "me" may not contain Administrator entries. (Maybe it doesn't matter.)

If Vista boots normally I have had no problem restoring an ERUNT save just by opening an explorer window in the \Windows\ERDNT\savefolder where savefolder is named for the date(using the AutoBackup program) and double-clicking on ERDNT.EXE.

You don't say what happens when you try to restore. Do you get an error message? Does the system sit there and do nothing? You have to give some info if you want some help.

I've cracked it! Thanks for your help :)

Your instructions were so simple that I knew that I would need to do something really silly in order to fail to restore. (All the googled sites that I found had horribly complex instructions, such as switching off UAC and doing two reboots, using Task Scheduler, etc, etc.)

So I *was* doing something really silly :(

In all my tests (a) through (g) in my first post, I created a backup, then immediately tried to restore the backup. However, I never actually rebooted to continue the restoration of the registry. I thought, "What's the point? I'm simply trying to restore the registry to its current state."

Therefore, if the first test failed, then every subsequent test would also fail, because my system was never rebooted. (Of course, if the first test had passed, then I would never have tried any of the other combinations.)

Glad it worked for you.
