Problem instaling Adobe reader 9.1

This is anonther problem that I have with windows vista 64bit. When trying to update Adobe reader to 9.1 i receive this error:

Error 1402. Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\software\classes\CLSID\{D38406DA-E8AA-484b-B80D-3D3DBDCC2FB2}\versionindependentprogID
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact support

Once again I think it is a registry problem. please advise on how to fis this.

Re: Problem instaling Adobe reader 9.1

Try this...
  1. Choose Start > Control Panel
  2. Double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
  3. Select Adobe Acrobat [version] and click Remove.
  4. When prompted, confirm that you want to remove Acrobat.
  5. Repeat the above procedure for all installed versions of Acrobat.
  6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall Acrobat.

Re: Problem instaling Adobe reader 9.1

Sorry,

I guess I should have mentioned that I tried to uninstall already. I get an error message when I try to uninstall. Has to do with privileges. My account is an administrator account.

Re: Problem instaling Adobe reader 9.1

If you have a partially installed program, Microsoft has a cleanup utility which just might do the trick.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Lemme know how that goes...

Re: Problem instaling Adobe reader 9.1

Why not update within Adobe Reader? Open it up, choose help updates, and wait. It will restart Adobe and that's it.

Frostmourne,

I tried your steps but no luck. I get the following message:

Installation incomplete
Adobe reader 8.1.5 (CPSID_49013) failed to install.

I should mention that thius is my laptop and my account is set up as administrator. i have read in this forum that vista does not give you all right as an administrator so I followed the steps to setup an administrator account from the following link, still no luck.

Re: Problem instaling Adobe reader 9.1

dsoquendo,
The 1402 Windows Installer error occurs when the Windows Installer is unable to read a particular registry key. Installation may fail because the installer attempts to clean up registry keys of previous versions to avoid conflicts with plug-ins and add-ins for third-party software.
You may be experiencing some Anti Virus conflict as well.
You could try turning UAC off to see if you can uninstall / reinstall. If you go this path download Adobe to your desktop prior to attempting to install. Don't forget to turn UAC back on again.

Right now I'm running TrendMicro Internet Security Pro. I have disable the antivirus but no luck. I also have UAC off and still no luck. I have tried upgrading in safe mode but it doesnt even attemp to upgrade in safe mode. I have done this for the other two problems I have with iTunes and Zune software.

Try sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt.

Try sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt.

sfc /scannow complete; windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.
