Solved What do I do with Microsoft Word 2002

Secunia PSI tells me that Microsoft Word 2002 is insecure. Threat rating is category 4, HIGH! There is a Download Solution button provided, but I can't access anything when I click on it. Then I have the situation below and I wonder if that is the same item as this one in PSI.

Windows Update gives me an important update of 52.3 MB and it is Office XP Service Pack 3. I have tried to install this item 3 times. It runs to a certain point and then tells me that I have to insert the disk. My system is OEM and I don't have any disk. So what do I do?

Although not certain, I believe the two problems are related and actually are describing the same problem - the fact that the program is not fully updated.

Check out the following article: Service packs, updates, and security patches may require the Office XP CD-ROM. More information is here: Download details: Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

But perhaps of greater importance, Word 2002 is not compatible with Vista: Windows Vista Compatibility Microsoft Microsoft Office Word 2002 and that may be part of the reason you are having troubles with it. You need to upgrade to a more recent version.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I downloaded that full SP3 that you are supposed to use if you don't have a CD. It did the same thing.

I have never used this Word program and I certainly am not going to purchase a newer version of it.

What I am worried about is the security issue. I suppose I dare not uninstall it???

Certainly you can try to uninstall it (and don't forget to uninstall the update you just downloaded as well). In fact, all things considered, that's probably the safest and best thing to do.

Good luck!

I don't have to worry about uninstalling update because it wouldn't install; asked me for the CD.

My concern is, if I uninstall will I be able to open documents that people might send me in Word? Will it affect other operations within my system? I'm not very computer smart, but it seems to me so many times one thing will depend on another and if it's not there it will mess everything up. Can you comment on this?

No, you won't... so I guess you do use it.

However, www.openoffice.org is a free alternative to microsofts programs, and is less than half the size, plus its vista happy.

Thank you for the link to Open Office.

I still have the concern that this Word 2002 on my computer presents a high security risk without the update. I found FreeFileViewer which is supposed to open about any program. So assuming I have found something I can open a Word document with, what about the rest of my question. Is this Word 2002 tied into other operations on my computer so that removing it will cause problems that way?

No. Just with your ability to open and read and modify Word documents and downloads and attadhments. Otherwise, it's a totally separate program from Vista and will not affect Vista at all (in fact, by deleting it you will be removing a security risk to the rest of your system).

Hope this helps. And I think you should give OpenOffice a look because it not only handles Word, but would allow you to open and work with Excel, PowerPoint and Access files as well. I know people who have Microsoft Office but have downloaded and use OpenOfffice because they prefer it. But the decision is yours.

Good luck!

Now remember, when you remove it it may still be the default program for opening .doc and .rtf and other filetypes, so you may need to revise the defaults and change the file associations to the new program (whichever you choose) - but that's not a big deal and if you have any troubles we can help you do so.

Have a good one.

Glad you reminded of this because I would have been shaken up the first time I tried to open a .doc.

So after I remove this and install Open Office, I would go into my defaults and anything associated with Microsoft Word, change it to Open Office, or even this FreeFileView ... Is that correct?

In addition to the above question, I have another. Why do I find Microsoft Word 2002 in my list of programs to uninstall, but I don't find it under C/Program Files?

If you remove Word and then install OpenOffice, I believe OpenOffice will setup the defaults and file associtions automatically and you probably won't have to do anything. I have no idea with this other program - especially if it is already installed - but what you just described may be what you need to do with that one.

I have no idea about why Microsoft Word 2002 isn't in Program Files. It might be listed under Microsoft Office or Office instead of as Microsoft Word or Word. The way to uninstall it is with Start / Control Panel / Programs and Features / find it in the list and right click on it and click uninstall.

Good luck!

Funny, i never looked before, but its not in add/remove. However the disk has the option on it.....

Try using: Removal Wizard - Office XP Resource Kit - Microsoft Office

Small files may have been left behind

Hope that helps.

Oh try a reboot too.

Edit..

Try looking in program files x86... its a 32bit app, so they go there.

"But that's not a big deal and if you have any troubles we can help you do so" Metoo

Hi thuynguyen,

Please start a new thread (if it's about Word 2002, you can use the Office Forum - if it's about changing defaults and file associations, you should use the General Discussion Forum) and explain your problem much more clearly - I'm not sure what "me too" refers to and I have no idea what problem you need help with (or why or with what program or on what version of Vista or on what manufacturer, make and model of computer, or pretty much anything at all). Please read the following before you compose your reply: How to ask a question - it will help you construct a question with useful and complete information in addition to or confirming what I've already asked here. Completely filling out the System Specs part of your user profile here in this forum would be a good place to start - and try to be as thorough as possible.

This thread is for Nikilet (at least until it is marked resolved and should probably always remain that way because once marked as solved, people tend to ignore it and so you don't get a very good response from people) and trying answer both of you at the same time now will confuse things for both of you (and for us) and make it harder for people later to figure out what happened and how the question was resolved - which is important as prior threads are often more useful and faster ways to get answers than starting new ones.

Thanks and perhaps I see you there (or someone else will assist you - or maybe both of us and others as well - it sometimes depends - I've seen some were quite a few people all pitched in to assist and that is almost always best as you get the benefit of the combined experience of everyone participating so what one may miss, another may catch).

And please do review that article I included in this post and include the additional information it suggests and that we need to help you - to do so effectively, we need your help and by providing a detailed explanation of the problem/question and giving us everything about your computer and software, you can help us a great deal so we don't have to waste a lot of time at first just asking questions to try to figure out what is going on and what we need to address. "Me too" isn't even close to enough.

Good luck!

Hi Nikilet,

Congratulations - it seems like you did it. You don't need to be so afraid of Revo. Yes, if not used properly, it can cause a good deal of harm by deleting the wrong things (unlike some other programs and I've seen people accidentally delete huge chunks of their registry because they clicked at the top of the list instead of only the bold part at the bottom), but properly cleaning up your system is important too. I also use Revo frequently (sometimes not even bothering with the normal Vista uninstall process) and quite typically find a LOT of registry entries that are bolded and need to be removed (I can almost always tell that they are related and do so - the last uninstall I did left 12 behind that I deleted) and other files as well (the last uninstall I did left 263 files and folders behind! I checked and they were all related (pretty much all in the same sub-directory) and so I checked them all and deleted them. Even still, that deleted program (one for getting online assistance from Verizon) just yesterday gave me a popup message saying it wanted to update, so even deleting everything and using Revo, I obviously didn't get it all - I plan to seek out what remains today and get rid of it (I think it's an updater in the startup menu or in task scheduler but those are just my first guesses).

One thing to consider. If you do ever decide to purchase Microsoft Word or a version of Microsoft Office despite having pretty much everything you need in OpenOffice - but not absolutely everything as I do with Office Enterprise 2007 (one thing OpenOffice especially lacks is somthing similar to Outlook and I find that's the program I use the most often of all of them), these files you left behind with Word 2002 may interfere with that installation. That's not a guarantee and in fact it probably won't be the case, but it is possible (so if it ever happens and you have a problem installing, remember this and finish the uninstall with Revo and try the installation again).

I hope OpenOffice went well and that the restore point was not required. Have you tried it yet? Did it update the defaults and file associations automatically as I suspected and hoped?

At one of my former paying jobs, we had to go to every computer in every branch of the company and replace Microsoft Office with OpenOffice (as a cost-saving measure) and I had no troubles that I can recall (it was quite a long time ago). I've always had Microsoft Office and prefer it myself (though I've done the 2010 trial and don't find it worth the money to upgrade from 2007 - thankfully), but if I wasn't such a big Microsoft fan (and not want to lose Outlook), I would certainly switch to the free OpenOffice. It's not exactly the same (things are in different places and such), but it is still a great set of programs and you can't beat that price (and I don't hear about people having a lot of problems with them either - but perhaps they go elsewhere more specialized for such issues).

Anyway, when you consider the issue resolved, you can click in the red/white triangle in the upper right of one of your posts (most use the last one) and type "solved" in the box and submit it. A moderator will notice and a green checkmark will appear next to the thread title. That way everyone will know it is a done deal and not come here trying to offer assistance - and viewers will know that the issue was solved and can check it out as whatever was said or done at least helped one person.

I hope this all helped you.

Good luck and best wishes!

Thank you for your very nice response.

I'm glad you commented on Revo. For quite some time, I've used Revo almost exclusively. Then recently I was told on a program not to use Revo for uninstall of that program and it rather spooked me off. I'm always very careful about not checking anything that isn't bolded.

I'll have to have your help once more. You said I could finish the uninstall with Revo. Since I have already uninstalled Word, it is not on the list of programs so how would I use Revo to go back and remove those items?

I didn't have any trouble with OpenOffice. It did update the defaults and file associations. I'm sure I mentioned early on that I had never used Word. I did open and check out OpenOffice and quite liked it.

I will wait to hear from you on this Revo deal and then I will close this thread. Again, I truly appreciate all your help.
