DVD drive won't recognize a software disk

I am trying to install the software for an embroidery machine in my laptop and my drive won't even recognize that it has a disk in it.

I tested the drive with another software disk and it recognized it.

I then tried installing the embroidery software on a desktop computer that is running Windows XP and it works fine.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4084N ATA Device.

There are two types of format.
One is called Fat32, it is used for XP
the other is called NTFS and it is used for Seven and Vista.
Although that is for the HD.
Lets put it another way. How old is the DVD?
Does it say compatible with Vista?
This may, also, help

Unfortunately, it doesn't give any of that information on the jacket for the disk.

It is a Singer XL400 Embroidery machine and I did some checking on the website. I guess there might be a compatibility issue but there is a patch. I guess the software gets to the completion stage and just stays there. The patch is supposed to help finish the installation. I just can't get my drive to even recognize that it has a disk in it.

Geez, this is getting more complicated by the minute.

I think I will wait to try this tomorrow when I have more time. It's getting late and this looks like it will take a while.

I also want to go to my desktop to view the information as it says to on the link you sent me.

Thanks for the info.

That's odd. (also, I'm pretty sure CDs and DVDs aren't Fat32 or NFTS format; that's just for hard drives and flash drives and the like) Ok do you know if your CD drive can read DVDs? (it should have soem sort of DVD logo on the drive if it can; see this: How do I find what CD or other disc drive I have? for help) If not, and that disc is indeed a DVD, that seems like the most likely problem. (Of course it would help if you knew whether it is a DVD, CD, or is it one of those mini CDs? I'm assumeing it's a DVD like rich said) If it can't read DVDs you're out of luck. You'll have to buy an optical drive that will.
If it can read DVD's it's likely to be a driver issue. Go to Start -> type "device manager" without the quotes, and hit enter. Look for anything with a yellow triangle on it, making sure to expand the "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" section (hit the plus sign). If there's one of those yellow triangles you have a driver issue. Report back here with what you find and I'll help you further.

Also, sorry if I stole your thunder richc46 :)

Usually have low HD free space left (<10 GB), often left on overnight. I really push its capabilities.
The drive that I have on my laptop is a CD/DVD. I know it works because of trying a different disk.

I've looked at the Device Manager and there is nothing to indicate that it is the problem.

I'm almost positive that it's a compatibility issue with Windows Vista because it will install on a desktop that runs Window XP.

I really don't want to start playing around with the Boot Registry as was previously suggested. I'm computer savvy to a point but that makes me nervous. Besides, I don't think that I should have to do that. I'm hoping that I hear from Singer with an easier fix.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks to all for their suggestions!!!

Stealing thunder doesn't work here! We are all one big team and we help each other along the way to solving a problem, if you think of something that hasn't already been suggested then it's great to contribute as long as it doesn't over complicate the matter (i.e. BSODs).

SFC Scan

1. Open the start menu
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. Right click on cmd and select Run as administrator
4. In command prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

5. Let it run and let me know if it finds any Integrity Violations

Just a curious question here, is your XP machine 32bit?

This may or may not be the problem but on this support page it does state "Maximum 32 bit operating system required".... you have Vista 64bit listed as your system now.

There is also a PDF for installation instructions.

Aw crap!!!! Thanks Derekimo, it looks like that's might be the problem.

I took a look at my system and it says that it's a 32 bit (look of confusion)

There is a patch for Vista but it talks about installing the software first:

INSTALLING FUTURA WITH THE VISTA OPERATING SYSTEM

  • Install Basic Futura software.
  • Installation will reach 100% and then stop; it will appear that the final pop-up screen is just hanging there. Terminate the installation procedure through the ‘processes” tab in the Windows task manager. Select “Install.exe” and then click on “End Process”. (This step will allow you to get the Futura icon on the desktop)

I've looked in task manager to see if the install.exe is listed, it's not.

I got the machine out and tried installing the software with it hooked up. I got a pop up that says "Please specify another location(the CD/DVD drive). The location you specified does not exist or cannot be reached."

I have also tried installing the patch first but it needs the software installed before it can apply the patch.

Can you post a screenshot of that pop up?

This is frustrating, I wish I had that disc to try and figure this out.

Do you have a flash drive that you could use on the XP machine to copy the contents of the disc onto the flash drive and see if you can then copy off the flash drive to the desktop of the vista machine?

Just wondering if you can then point it to the desktop when it says specify another location.

Well, I have some news.

I got in touch with the company that I bought the machine from and they gave me an 800 number for Singer Education support.

After talking with them, it seems that my drive speed might be the problem. Once I fax them over a copy of my receipt, they will send me a new disk that will hopefully be compatible with my drive speed.

In the meantime, as soon as I can locate my flash drive, I'm going to try to copy the files to that in hopes that I can install it from there.

Funny thing, I have a WD external hard drive and I tried to copy the files to that but my desktop computer won't recognize that it's attached.

Another can of worms that I don't care to open.

Thanks everyone.
