    no sound

I have a Dell desktop operating Vista 32bit with Realtek speakers. They are not working. I have checked everything, they are plugged in, have a green light on them, they are plugged into the back of the computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, restored the computer to a point when I thought they were working. I have two icons on the lower right corner. One white speaker with a red x and an orange realtek icon. THe realtek shows that I have no audio device installed when I open the volume control. The other icon shows my speakers working properly, that is a green check mark next to them. However when I open the properties the levels tab is blank.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you go to Control Panel\Sound, are the speakers checkmarked? Is Realtek HD checkmarked?

Are you able to access the Realtek setup program from there? I'm not on my Vista machine right now so I'm going by memory. I''ll get details tomorrow.

Also in Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound....., are any errors listed.

In Control Panel\Sound, if Speakers\Realtek High Definition Audio is shown and checkmarked, click on it and select Configure. You should be able to set the proper configuration and test it. I find the software to be strange because I can usually get to the full Realtek setup from there but only get part of it.

In addition, do your speakers have manual controls on each. If so, are they turned up.
Do you have a manual switch to turn them on and off?

When I click the configure botton nothing happens. Same with the test button under properties. The speakers do have a manual button, they are turned on and up.

What model Dell is it? Dell is one of those manufacturers, like Sony and others, whereby only drivers sourced through their website actually work, even if they are for hardware that you would normally get the drivers from the actual manufacturer, such as NVidia or Realtek. This is because they take the basic driver and tweak it (add/remove features) so that it works correctly with their implementation of the hardware.

I unistalled the driver and reinstalled it from the Dell website. Nothing changed. When I right click the speaker icon on the bottom toolbar which has a red x on it, if I open the volume mixer it says no audio device installed. Yet when I right click and open sounds it shows the speakers with a green check under playback tab.
