no sound

I have a Creative Labs 7.1 system. There is a switch between the subwoofer box (the black box you refer to) and the power supply that can turn off the speaker system or change the bass level. I periodically experience no sound and find that if I turn that switch off temporarily and then turn it back on, I'll get my sound back. It's magic.

Sometimes, I need to go to Device Manager\Sound and mess with the properties of the realtek HD audio controls. That's magic also.

Other times, I've just pulled one of the connectors from the box or the back of the computer and plugged it back in. That's magic also. I think it's an impedance thing.

I don't think you understand what I meant about the discrete sound card. It's a separate device like a graphics card that you go out and buy and then plug it into your motherboard.

Mine is old - 4.1, no on/off switches, base know on the back subwoofer. First thing I did was unplug and tried to reset. Hit test on everything in teh properties and the meter bounces - ?????????????????? Any other ideas?
I do not have a discrete card.

If you go to Control Panel\Sound, are the Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) checkmarked. If so, click on it and select Configure. Is is set for 5.1? If you click on test, do any of the speakers make a sound?

It does not say realtek, after the configure, the meter is bouncing no sound. If the sound card is bad would the computer sound still appear to be working (bouncing meter)?

My Computer

You have a integrated audio chipset. Even though you have Realtek speakers, you don't have to use the Realtek software.

However, I made an error assuming you have a 5.1 system but it shouldn't matter which selection you make. If you use the 2- then I believe only two speakers would work.

Right click on the first option and select "show disabled devices" if it's not checkmarked. Does it reveal the Realtek options? If it does, select Speakers- Realtek...... and make it the default. Then go to configure and select Quadraphonic. Then click on Test. Do any of the speakers provide sound?

I had mentioned the on\off switch and you said you had none. However, in the description of your system above, you said you have- "control (on/off) volume dial".

Try turning that off and pull the plug on the transformer for about 10 minutes. Plug the transformer back in and then power on the switch.

I see that the specs for your system include the integrated 7.1 audio.

Would you go here- Gateway Support - Downloads & Support Documents - Desktop / GT Series / GT5676 and download/install the audio driver. Then go back to Control Panel\Sound and see if you can get the Realtek High Definition options.

Can you tell me what the model number is for your speaker system. For instance, mine is Creative Inspire P7800.

Did you reboot after installing the driver?

You didn't say what happened with the power off procedure I mentioned.

You also didn't say what the speaker system model is. It should be on the black box. Do you have the setup paper work that came with them.

Go here- Microsoft Fix it Solution Center: troubleshooting software issues Click on Windows and find the Diagnose and Fix Sound Playback and Audio....................

Run it.

By the way, thanks for posting the speaker information. I took a look at the manual but didn't see anything to help. What is the color of the jacks on the back of your computer that you're plugging the speaker plugs into.

Looks like your connections are okay.

Go to Control Panel\Sound and click on the Speakers- Realtek........ Click on Properties. Is "Use This Device (enable)" shown in the Device Usage?

Was it enabled or did you have to enable it? If you had to enable it, did you reboot.

Does it say this device is working properly?

We'll get back to that after you answer my questions. As I've said before, all this sound stuff is magic.

One other thing to try. Disconnect the volume control from the black box and then reconnect it.

It was enabled and it says it is working properly. Tried the disconnect before I got to this forum. Is this normal if the sound card is bad?

My Computer

Go to Device Manager\Sound................. Under the Driver Tab, does it say "disable" which means it's enabled.

Please tell me the model number for your HP.

In Control Panel, is there a choice similar to Sound, Programs and Features, etc. for Realtek?
