| Vista 64 bit | Kaspersky crashed during install on Vista 64 bit machine Tried installing Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 (KAV) on a friends Vista machine and it crashed during the install. I was required to use the last restore point to get the machine up and running. Has anyone had similar issues w/KAV & Vista 64-bit? When I tried to install KAV initially it found Norton and would not install. I removed Norton but did not reboot before installing KAV. Does anyone think this might be the cause? I am reluctant to try again as the computer is for my friends business and he lost a few files when I went to the restore point. Thoughts?? Thx, reapersoft |

| Windows 7 , Vista | Re: Kaspersky crashed during install on Vista 64 bit machine Hi. . . A re-boot would be necessary after removal of a product like Norton, b/c kernel-mode & boot drivers involved. No choice but System Restore - you did fine, so keep going and finish the job: First, create a current System Restore point since system stable - START | type rstrui.exe & hit enter - go thru screens and create restore point Run the Norton Removal Tool - NRT - 2x minimum to make sure all Symantec (Norton) modules gone. Download it (any version) and SAVE it to your desktop. Close all windows. RIGHT-click on NRT icon & select Run as Administrator. RE-BOOT upon each completion. Now run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, kb290301 to get rid of remnants of Norton & KAV. Reset the Windows Firewall to default settings - START | type firewallsettings.exe - hit enter | Advanced tab | Restore Settings | Apply (if applicable) | OK - RE-BOOT Optional, precautionary step - run the Vista System File Checker - SFC START | type cmd.exe | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe - cmd/DOS screen appears | type sfc /scannow & hit enter Re-boot after SFC - some files can't repair while HDD mounted. Note that if repairs are indicated, it doesn't necessarily relate to crash of KAV install. Re: System Restore - I would expect the loss of programs installed after the date of the restore point chosen. Files of a personal/ business nature should not have been lost during the System Restore unless they were located in an area that System Restore would hit - like \Program Files, \Windows, etc... or on the c: (OS) root drive itself. It would be best to contain any docs, xls, etc... files within the user profile folders or on a seperate partition of the hard drive. This can easily be accomplished via "shrinking" the OS drive via diskmgmt.msc. System Restore can then be chosen for the OS drive only and leave the partition unaffected the next time rstrui is needed - and it will be at some point.
