Solved MPSSVC Service Invalid

I currently run Vista 64x

Long story short here:

Over a year ago I obtained a virus that obliterated these three things (as far as I know at least):

1. Windows Automatic Updates
2. Windows Security Center
3. Windows Firewall

Through much googling and such, I have managed to recover automatic updates and the security center, however, I can literally find no one else with the same problem I have for the firewall.

Security center is not able to start windows firewall because the service is not running. The windows firewall service does not show up in the Services list.

Using CMD and typing "net start mpssvc" I get told that the "Service name is invalid". If I try entering "sc query mpssvc", I get "The specified service does not exist as an installed service"

So basically, the service has been completely removed from the computer. The same thing happened for the security center, except on another forum another person uploaded his registry key for the default x64 security center, which I simply installed, rebooted, and it works fine. Could the solution be as simple as uploading the right registry key(s) for windows firewall? For the updates, I found on a forum that I had to enter a bunch of commands on cmd that downloaded the service and installed it on reboot.

Normally I don't care for windows firewall but for some ridiculous reason, my bloody printer demands it to be up and running to even operate. Jesus.

Can anyone provide some insight onto this? I've been mindlessly googling for hours and I'm ready to smack my face against a wall.

Thanks :D

Welcome
Maybe this will work, but I have doubts based upon your description of the problem
Diagnose and fix Windows Firewall service problems automatically

If it does not, I never heard of a printer that must have the Windows Firewall. There are several good firewalls that you can download, comando and zone alarm for two
FREE Firewalls for Windows - Free Firewall Download

If you must have Windows Firewall, try to repair with an SFC command. Run 3 times if errors are found and cannot be corrected

If that does not work and you have a vista install DVD you can make a repair install

Thanks for your reply.

I've tried your first solution already, but for some reason it gives and error in the middle of it's check and gives up

Unfortunately this requires windows firewall. I believe its cause the installers wanted to open ports on the firewall to allow total access to the printer, and then they believed for some reason that windows firewall would be always active on every computer that the printer would ever be installed on.

I'm afraid I've tried SFC before to no avail - tried it again for good luck but nothing.

I'm also afraid I'm lacking my CD for vista, I seemed to have misplaced it. The search for it will be a challenging one at that so I was looking for an alternate solution before that has to happen.

The only solution that I have is call the supplier of your computer, if Vista was preinstalled and get a DVD for cost, which should be about $25.00. You will need the key number on the computer or you can borrow a DVD from someone, but you need the key number again.
If it were me, Id buy a upgrade of Windows Seven and install it.

Hello!

Yes, that is the solution! I shall upload the correct registry key this evening :)

I've tried your first solution already, but for some reason it gives and error in the middle of it's check and gives up.

Are you getting a "Resource Protection could not perform the required operation" by any chance?

Who removed this virus? I don't count a virus as properly removed if you have to fix that error message? Did you remove it yourself, or did a trained malware removal graduate do it for you (these experts are free to contact - the computer repair man in the local shop is NOT one! (by definition))

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Aaah that is excellent to hear! Fantastic! Thank you :D

Strange - I ran it again to see what the error message was and it seemed to operate fine this time. However it still was unable to fix my problem, saying the firewall service could not be started.

If I remember correctly I removed it myself, this was well over a year ago (maybe even two years ago) and can't remember the details. I highly doubt that little guy is still hanging around in my system after 2 years as I've done a plentiful of virus scans and system cleans since then :p

Thanks again ;)

Hello again!

Sorry for the delay. Things got a bit hectic...

Anyway, here you go.

THANK YOU!

After adding it to the registry and restarting, I found that the firewall was still unable to be turned on, except it had an actual error message. Fortunately a quick google turned up that the error message was saying access was denied to the firewall and that microsoft's "Fix it" for Windows Firewall solved the problem.

Firewall is up and running and printer stopped complaining.

Thank you SO much, I've been having this issue for 2 years and it's finally been fixed, thank you so much for your assistance. In return I shall lurk around these vista forums to see if I can help out anyone.

Thanks again!

No problem! I am really glad that all is now well. You will always be welcome around here :)

Just for your information, services are actually quite easy. For a missing service, match up the Operating System (Vista, 7, Server 2008, W2k8r2), bit version (32bit, 64bit), and service pack level (SP0, SP1, SP2) and export HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\{service name} and import in into another machine.

You can't safely do this with most of the registry, but for this you can.

Richard

P.S. Maybe over the next couple of weekends I shall write a quick program to export the services into .reg files, and then install the updates one at a time, and re-run the program, and then I could generate a service registry key database. Whenever I get round to it over the next couple of weeks!
