H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)

I am currently running the memtest on the computer with no error's so far, although I am having problems with the HD Diagnostic as per the instruction guide it told me to download the Hitachi software for my drive although that appears to place it into an eternal reboot loop. Should I use another manufactures diagnostic tools?

Check your BIOS to see what transfer mode your HDD is using. I suspect that it could be one of the PIO modes which, compared to the normal DMA modes, is very slow.

Unfortunately Sony is notoriously bad in providing BIOS options and in my laptop's case it's no different, with no options for changing the transfer mode of the hard drive.

I have scanned the system with both memtest and Seagate's diagnostic tool which have both been unable to determine the problem. Is there any other steps which I could take?

Surely it HAS to be a hardware fault of some type. If it's having the exact same problem after a format and reinstallation...

Do you have another harddrive you can try?
Same with the ram, even try with one stick instead of 2, then try the other one instead if there's no change..

I have an Acer Aspire 7520 with a similar probllem only mine stays on the bios screen for 5 mins before booting and running normally. Turns out it's a fault in the IDE channel connected to the optical drive, and the fault goes away if I remove the drive itself.

Hardware issues are a case of eliminating possible causes one at a time, but with laptops there's not a great deal to eliminate after the ram, hard drive and wireless card...

Good luck with it and fingers crossed!
