4870 2GB or 4890 1GB

OK i choose and i bought SAPPHIRE RADEON HD4890 OC 1GB GDDR5
Now i believe my pc is ready.
(Read my System specs)

Actually thats wrong. RAM on a graphics card gives it more space to buffer game data so it takes stress of your normal RAM trust me 2GB always gives better performance. also simply by overclocking the 4870 just a little bit you can get the same performance.

no more ram wont give better performance in this case , 1GB is fine , yes for high resolutions , lots of AA and AF and especially if hes running vsync with triple buffering he will need alot of ram but 1GB is enough , the 1gb card has a faster core and more memory bandwidth , it will be a faster card altogether (in this instance obviously im talking specifically about these two cards i dont want to get into an argument about GPU ram usage i do take get the point your trying to get across :D )

they should have the same memory bandwidth.

if you are playing gta4 you will need the extra ram. takes almost 2 to max out the video settings. but i would look at benchmarks for games you want to play (or max out) because you may not need top of the line. used to have a 3870 which ran crysis quite well (not maxed obviously).

either way you go, wait til the new cards come out as the 4xxx series will drastically drop in price.

no they don't actually the 4890 being a much newer card has a much higher bandwidth

they dont have the same memory bandwidth the 2gb is 3.6gb/s and the 1gb version is 4.2gb/s , i dont make these things up you know :P

not sure if it is needed or not, but if you have them on your psu you might as well use them.

they might only supply the 2x6 cause that is the norm and peoples psu's dont have the 2x8 connecters.

after some research im editing my post , it seems it was optional on the older ATI cards however on the new ones it is HIGHLY recomended you connect using both the 6 pin and 8 pin for stable running

the reason for the 6 and the 8 is if you use two sixes you only get normal function with a 6 and a 8 it enables the overclocking but two sixes is fine for now

the card has two pci/e 6 pin sockets , whats the 8 pin all about? is there something i dont know? are we talking about the pcie adapter you can use if you only have one pcie connector on your psu?

haha ok he has a eight pin and a six pin on his 4890, it came with two sixes because thats what is required for normal running, the eight pin is only used for overclocking and isn't needed unless he will do that haha :D

so there is a seperate 8 pin socket on the card , specifically for overclocking?? how odd , ive never seen that before i learn something new every day , and yet another reason to stay away from ATI thats just bizzarre , any pics of this? and where exactly is the 8 pin connector coming from , cos ive never seen a psu with one

no it actually doubles as the six pin and there is a connector for it thats like 3 bucks that you can get at somewhere like newegg, and it pulls more power than two sixes, also i think there are some nivida cards that use it two because they are not ati branded plugs :P and thats not a reason to stay away :P
and here is your picture the six goes there in the eight
a six pin gets its power from a single 4pin molex, while the eight pin uses two for more power

still think its rubbish that you need you add an extra plug in order for the catalyst control center to unlock the overclocking options , it would appear that you can overide it with riva tuner but you need the extra connectors for a stable overclock????!!!! seems like an old un needed extra left over from the 2 series cards , ATI really are a bit rubbish


After reading up about it a little it seems you do indeed NEED to connect both the 6 and 8 pin connectors with the modern cards (it was optional with the older models) im gonna edit my original advice..................so i dont look too stupid

Yes you need to make sure the 8pin is connected with an 8pin adapter, so if your power supply supplies the 8pin adapter connect it with the 8pin if you are missing the 8pin adapter, please provide us a copy of the purchase receipt so we can mail one out to you.

Factory OC'ed cards such as yours have the voltage in the cards BIOS raised, which allows them to reach 1Ghz and above. The 8-pin connection is required to provide more stable power to maintain that higher core speed.

Running with only two six pins will still give you the factory OC, but you run the risk of instability.
