AMD or Intel?

Is there any advantage to using one or the other? Does one work better on Linux?

I'm making a cheap computer to run Smoothwall and just wanted to see.

Both are great. You want cheap, pick AMD.

i beg to differ blue ok you have to remember..... the Phenom II is just four cores...... the I7 is... well 8 hyperthreaded cores so lets see 4 vrs 8... 8 would win.... but the fact that amd's four come close is quite an acopmlisment, its like running a Q6600 (or whatever you want to use out of intels quad line) against a I7, and if i remember right.... the Phenom II is way faster than a Q6600

when i get the money for a home built computer, i am getting intel as that what my family has had.

Good choice, Intel is the way to go.

I'm backing pizzaman. I'm switching to AMD and putting a 945 X4 in my new build or the 955, depending on price. Intel is a rip-off and most of the benchmarks are built by Intel. As for games, if you are play at 1080p as I will, then 3 or 4fps difference between Intel and AMD is practically insignificant.

not exactly... some.... not all haha but still they ones they bench do so yea....
