AMD Phenom II hits 5GHz stable

Afaik, the two pairs of cores don't use cache to communicate. If pair 1 wants to communicated with pair 2, it has to go through the FSB. Obviously AMD quad cores use a different method for each core to communicate with each other as it doesn't use a northbridge.

Ghz means nothing. Intel played this game in the pentium 4 era. Lets see the benchmarks.

    Overclocked to 3Ghz Stable.

Avoid this chip at all costs! My friend has this processor on an EVGA 750i motherboard, and it is absolutely horrendous to overclock. It's got some absurd 7X multiplier and does not like its FSB to be pushed far enough for any reasonable OC. It comes stock at 2.33Ghz, and we managed to boot windows at a measly 2.6Ghz. We aren't enthusiasts or claim to know everything about OCing, but in terms of basic OCing, this chip does not do it for us. The 7X multiplier alone should have been a reason NOT to buy this chip. The aging Q6600 overclocks WAY higher giving you much more bang-for-buck.

Q6600 ($197.99) vs QX9770 ($1,400.00) vs Phenom II 940 ($219.00)

If I had to add my $0.02 to the Phenom II debate, I would say they terribly overhyped their product line too early (but who doesn't). They overshot their first PII's and ended up competing not with the i7's but the midrange Core 2 quads. So it's fair to say AMD led people to believe something that did not exist. The PII's from AMD are a midrange competitor. Therefore the price/performance ratio is all that really matters in the midrange market, so have a look at the benchmarks between the Q6600 and the PII which are roughly in the $200 price point.

For everyday tasks, it seems the PII is a champ for what I'd pay. Fairly fast speeds, but not too pricey either. With people's budgets already strained, I'd say this is the perfect price point to buy a CPU in. The PII 940 is a strong recommendation in my books for that reason.

NOTE: I'm NOT saying that 65nm = 45nm, or one is older than the other, because those facts are OBVIOUS. I'm speaking strictly from a price point-of-view to say that "If I were given a $250 CPU budget today, what would I buy?" If that were the question I was asking, then there is an obvious winner here. :geek:

A Phenom II at 5 ghz is incredibly impressive, look at the old Phenom CPU's, they usually couldn't surpass 4 ghz. A Phenom II at 5 ghz will perform like a Core 2 EXTREME QX9770 at 5 ghz. An i7 in the lower 4 ghz range will still own the Phenom II though.
