Boot Advanced Options - Number of Processors

How to Change the Number of Processors Used at Boot Up in Vista

information   Information
If you have a multiple core CPU (Ex: Intel Core Duo or Quad CPU) or multiple CPUs, then this will show you how to change the Number of Processors that will be used during boot up for troubleshooting and debugging purposes to be able to determine if there is a problem with a single processor/core, or for a programmer to test their code against a single core while running on their multi-core system.
Note   Note
Vista will use all your processors by default at boot up without this Number of Processors setting box checked. Using all of your available processors (cores or CPUs) durring boot allows the computer to boot faster only because a multiple core CPU or multiple CPUs can handle and do more at once than a single core or CPU. Multiple cores do not actually increase the speed, but only increase the number of processor cores working on the job which in turn has the job finish quicker. If you do not have much running at startup, then you may not notice much improvement in how long it takes to startup.
Tip   Tip
People have reported that by checking this setting and selecting all of their available CPUs, they have seen a performance increase in boot up speed despite the Note above . See the example below. If it does not help, then you can do step 7 to undo this and go back to the default settings.
warning   Warning
Selecting a lower amount of processors to use at boot up than you actually have can increase the amount boot up time causing a longer boot.

EXAMPLE: Boot Up Time Before and After
NOTE:
This is the before and after boot up time for my computer after I changed it to use all 4 cores. For fun you can post your results here: ReBoot Time
Before_ReBoot-Time.jpgAfter_ReBoot_Time.jpg

Here's How:
NOTE:
Before you do this, you should see what your current boot up time is so you can compare it to what it will be before and after applying this.
1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type msconfig and press Enter.
3. Click Continue in the UAC prompt.
4. Click on the Boot tab. (See screenshot below)
5. Click on the Advanced options button.
Step1.jpg

6. To Change the Number of Processors at Boot -
A) Check the Number of processors box, then click on the drop down arrow and select the number of available processors (cores or CPUs) you want to have used at boot up. (See screenshots below step 7)
NOTE: To test to see if this can speed up your boot time or not, then select the highest number listed for all of the available processors to be used at boot up and check the Detect Hal box.
B) Click on OK.
C) Go to step 8.

7. To Restore the Default Number of Processors at Boot -
A) Uncheck the Number of processors box.
B) Click on OK.
Step2A.jpgStep2B.jpg

8. Check the Make all boot settings permanent box and click on OK. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If you do not check this, then you will Selective startup dotted instead of Normal startup under the General tab. You can still make changes again by checking this again after any changes.
Step3.jpg

9. Click on Yes at the confirmation window. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You can restore or make changes to this again later if you want. I will confirm it. Just remember or write down what you had set (checked or unchecked) before if you wanted to restore back to those settings later.
Step4.jpg

10. Check the Don't show this message again box. (See screenshot below step 11)
NOTE: You will not see this again after checked.
11. Click on the Restart button.
NOTE: If you checked the box and want to restore this Restart box, see: How to Restore the System Configuration Restart Prompt in Vista
WARNING: This will restart the computer immediately. Make sure you save and close anything open you do not want to lose.
Step5.jpg

12. After you have started back to the desktop, you can check to see what your new boot up time is for fun.
That's it,
Shawn

I've tried a lot of restarts with no effect.

AMD Turion 64X2 Mobile Technology TL 64 2.19 GHz.

According to Device manager both processors are working OK.

Ed,

See if restarting your computer will fix the problem.

When you right click on Computer, in the Start Menu, and click Properties, what does it show your processor as under the System section?

Ed,

I must admit that I'm not sure why they are not showing up here. The only thing I can think of is to check the settings in BIOS to see if there is one that looks like it may affect the number of cores.

I finally got to the boot details in the BIOS, and got this line:

/NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /NUMPROC=1

The cursor was on the 1 but it would let me change it or delete it.

I guess I'll live with it until such times I do a re-install.

Thanks

Ed,

You might try resetting the CMOS jumper and BIOS to their default settings. It may then recognize the correct processor setting.

Do you have the latest motherboard chipset and BIOS versions installed for your motherboard? However, I do not see Vista listed for it though. This may be part of the problem.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX2110ca tablet notepad. The specs are:

HP Pavilion tx2110ca Notebook PC -  Product Specifications

It came with Vista Home Premium installed. Also the option for dual processors was there. It just disappeared during my tune up activities.

I have logged most of the things I changed but none seen likely to be the cause.

I have run CCleaner twice and included the registry on the last run. I reinstalled the backup from that run to no avail.

I'll try the BIOS reset.

My Computer

Sorry, but this tip is completely bogus. It was featured on Lifehacker.com as well, and they and other sites posting about it have retracted their recommendation.

The setting for "number of processors" in msconfig is a debug tool that should NOT be changed for normal use. It is only used to RESTRICT the number of processors used during boot-up, so a support person can debug if there is a problem with your CPU and Windows. It has NO effect (other than possibly bad) on the speed at which Windows boots up, as Windows automatically uses all available CPU's if you leave this "unchecked".

Windows Vista Tip: Make Vista Use Multiple Cores to Speed Boot Time

You are giving folks very bad advice here...

My Computer

Hello Jsmorley,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I respect your opinion, but I must disagree. I and many others have noticed and confirmed a mark improvement in startup speeds with using only this tip to increase the number of processors to test the amount of time it takes to boot. It cannot be just a coincidence. I invite you to give it a try and test the timing yourself to see what results you get.

Here's a quote from the link referenced at the Lifehacker link you provided above:

Vista can boot faster on a multi-core processor - hoax | Windows Problem Solver

Instructions
This hint is only useful if your computer has more than one processor core. Modern processors that have two, four, or more cores can benefit from this.

Please share your results.

I have intel core 2 quad 9300, 4gb, 320gb x 2, gateway fx7026 pc. vista home premium sp1 64bit. this trick does nothing what so ever and even made it feel slower to boot. i have no apps in startup or anything starting up either.
Ok, a test.
I did the vbs file thing. It said 100 seconds or something, i totally forget. Opened msconfig and unchecked the processor thing. reboot and it says 100 seconds. go back into msconfig and check so it uses all 4 of my cpu and it took 161 seconds. so it went way slower with it on. Well after a few reboots pc won't start anymore. lucky the start up repair auto kicked in and fixed and now i am fine again. however i am not going to use this hoax hack thing. it doesn't work.

Hello buggs1a,

I'm sorry to hear that it did not help you., but this is not a hoax hack. It is a legitimate option placed in Vista by Microsoft to do what is explained in the tutorial. Did you have any of the other options checked in the Boot Advanced Options window under step 6?

I've seen in another forum how most people said it didn't help them and that it caused them issues and that it slowed them down too. They said it's already using your full system spec when booting etc by default. Others also said some other stuff too.

I don't have anything checked cept that use 4 cpu option. If it was legit then it would have worked for me and dropped my time a noticable increase in boot speed in my opinion. I don't see how it is possible to work for some and not for others.

My Computer

I do not know why it works for some and not others either. I would imagine that there is somthing causing it to not work properly with some folks. I have seen a clear improve with mine with it set as in the tutorial. I did check the Detect HAL option afterwards to though. You might check it to see if it makes any difference for you.

I'll do that and report back.
Does checking the cpu thing mean with it checked it should be much faster then if it's not checked?
What are the other options for?

My Computer

Having the Number of Processors boxed checked with the number of CPUs that you have selected should help it run faster at startup than not checked. The other options are mostly for debugging and should not be used for normal use.

I'm not sure what it would mean if it made a big difference for someone and someone else not much like me. I wonder if that means it is cus I don't have anything in start up or anything like that or if by chance Gateway made my pc a certain way in the setup of the software or something.

My Computer

It would depend on if you used the extra horsepower or not at startup. The extra CPUs can do more at once than a single CPU, so it gets done quicker. If you do not have much running at startup (Ex: Programs or drivers), then it will probably not make to much difference.
