I was looking into it and it seems like that driver has been causing alot of problems on vista and particularly COD and Farcry. I would definitely think that DLL is a possibility for the problem and have you tried running the game in Dx9?

its artifacting and its probably down to your onboard ram , its either faulty or its getting too hot , you really could do with reseating your heatsink making sure your ram chips are properly covered and your heatsink is making good contact

you need to remove the hs , clean off all the paste and reseat with new paste preferably arctic silver.

the issue is 99% heat related

its not a good idea if you dont know what your doing though it can be fiddly

the 180.48 drivers all the way up to 181.22 were affected with this problem. i figured out what was causing it because when i would no physx software installed while SLI was running, it didnt crash after 10 minutes, (the infamous "system tried to reset the display driver and failed to recover from timeout) and no artifact freezing. since it was an early driver build for Physx, they later fixed it in the 182.06+ drivers. oh and by the way, the latest WHQL drivers are 185.85 and the Beta is 186.08.

Also archie123, it can't be hardware if it's not happening on XP, right?

I'm having the same issue as you, the only diffirence is that I'm using GTX260 Graphic Card and that I don't get any artifacts. But the Freezes are realy P!ssing me off.

I advise you to go to Activisions Website and mail them about this problem, I did the exact same thing today. Once I get a useful answer from them, I'm letting you know.

Gl!

P.S. I've been having these freezes ever since I bought my PC, and thats about 3months now :mad::mad:

My Computer

I've got this response from Activison but it didn't help for me, after 10 minutes it froze again. Maybe this helps for other people reading this form.

Quote :
"We recommend that you shut down background programs.

1) Click the start button
2) Choose run
3) Type MSCONFIG in the run window and click ok
4) In the service tab make sure the 'Hide all Microsoft Services' is checked
5) Then click on the disable all this will turn off all the background applications
6) Click the startup tab and click disable all, Click the apply button and then ok
To turn your background applications back on hit enable all button and restart your system "

Thanks Haney.

I don't play Call of Duty much anymore, and when I do, I haven't got the problem in quite a while.

Just a quick note to all, I overclocked my card while played ArmA: Armed Assault, and the problem occured, so if the problem happens in call of duty 4 again, i'll "underclock". I used a program called 'Vtune.'

ok the best way to get to the bottom of this

download and install this

RivaTuner v2.24 download from Guru3D.com

during install you will be asked if you want to install some riva tuner add ons , click YES , these are the signed drivers for vista

run it , under the "main" tab goto the FIRST customise tab (its like a little triangle) click it and you will get a popout list , click the last one it looks like a magnifiying glass

yuo will probably get a popup asking you if yuo want it to automatically install any plugins that will apply to you , click YES

a graph will pop up

at the bottom right click SETUP

under DATA SOURCES put a check (tick left hand side) next to...

core clock\rop domain
core clock\shader domain
memory clock
core temperature
fan duty cycle
sensor supply voltage

uncheck anything else

hit apply then OK

at the bottom of the graph there is a red dot (bottom left) you want to click this to enable background monitoring

you now have on screen everything you need to know about your gpu , now the fun bit

right clcik each graph one by one and clcik SETUP at the bottom there is an on screen display section

put a check in show ....... in on screen display

when you get to the last one before you exit in the on screen display section check the RUN SERVER option

click OK

run the game , you'll find all this info core clock speed , memory speed core temp etc magically appear in the top left of your gaming screen

you can then see EXACTLY what your gpu is doing , how hot its getting , if the voltage is dropping too low if its underclocking , what speed your gpu fan is doing etc

you can troubleshoot your issue from there

yuo can also set the size colour and position of the onscreen display , but im bu88ered if im going into all that now ;)

Okay, with this info at the top, how can I use it to know what's not going good and what's not?

Also, I didn't have options for

fan duty cycle
sensor supply voltage

Thanks a lot for your help mate.

does your gpu have FAN? also it seems yuor mobo doesnt support voltage reading from that sensor , never mind

run the game for a while let us know what your core temp gets to and make sure your core clock and memory clock stay constant

No, no fan.

Here are the results I came up with.

Just after launching game:
GPU 540MHz, 1350MHz, 56 degrees
MEM: 391.5 MHz
43.5

When the screen froze and pixels were disordered:
GPU 540MHz, 1350MHz, 76 degrees
MEM: 391.5 MHz
87.5

So, what can you make with these results?

well..........your core certainly isnt overheating and your gpu isnt downclocking itself (this can happen if the ram is clocked too high)

it cant tell us unfortunately if your ram (onboard video ram) is failing which i think may be the issue

can you clock back your ram by say 100mhz (underclock it i mean) and try again just as an experiment

is the rest of your rig at stock speeds? cpu , ram?

have you tried older drivers?

Yes, I have tried older drivers.
I have also tried downclocking my RAM [even SAFEMODE clocking my graphics card (core clock, memory clock and shader clock)].

It HAS TO BE software related... it doesn't happen on XP. This is very strange!
