Can lack of power cause blue screen crashes

Hmmm. I have got the latest bios version (2.60). I updated it before i put on vista.

can you afford new power supply? that might be part of the problem, but you said things work fine under XP? that is telling me it is a 64 bit problem, maybe driver for the TV card?

I have found a power supply (Corsair 520HX) which i'm willing to buy if i could be sure that will solve the problem. I have tried running vista without a driver for the tv card and it disabled but i still get the same problem. I would have thought that if it was a 64bit driver problem some other people would have experienced it but after searching many forums i was unable to find people with the same problem.

things like this can drive you nuts, trust me i know spent better part of october trying to figure what was wrong with my computer till the power supply decided to die.

one thing you could try is removing hardware and just run with basic stuff then start adding stuff in till you find problem

try physically removing the TV card and run without it to see if it is a problem

if i was in your place i would tear everything out and do a fresh install of vista with just the basic stuff in to get it up and running. hard drive, cd-rom, memory and video card. i would disable the onboard sound even. just basic stuff. then start adding things in after you have it running and there is no problems. if there is still problems with the basic stuff then it might be the power supply

yep it might be the power supply.
I think you should get a better one anyway,i wouldnt all that hardware on a 400w generic PSU.
Get a better PSu and see if the BSODs disappear.

You may want to try a clean install like hclarkjr said .

Give the FULL specs of your system. Including any usb support. 400W is low for a power supply on a new system. List all things that are connected to the motherboard, including the things you would not normallyt post. Give details of your error log if you can.

imo 400w is ample enoughto run what you have...
although i have an Nvidia 8800GTX i too experiance similar problems and i run a 500w supply
what research i have made it is to do with DX10 and video drivers
i can run a game for as long as i wish but when i close it and try anothere video related game, flash ,video ect the after a short while the video driver with crash
vista will then try to restart it and fail this will then continue intoll the sytem cant take any more and blue screen

i am hoping that there will be some kind of fix in SP1

Right. Sorry for the delay in replying i have finally fitted my new psu. The problem still exists though. My bsods are telling me its to do with atikmdag.sys now. As i understand this is a problem within the ati drivers (7.1 onwards) and ati are aware of it but no fix as yet. Does anyone know anything different?

Very interesting discussion. I have attached my system configuration, and I get exactly the same problem as the thread starter. It seems the moment I get the blue screen is totally random (once I opened Media Player, once I opened a game, etc). Happens also that the video driver stops responding, and vista restarts it. The problem is identical with the one of the thread starter. Video driver is the latest (Catalyst 8.8), also vista is freshly installed.

I'm not sure if power supply was the problem because I kept having to problem after changing my PSU. I solved the problem by buying a new MOBO so never found the root cause. AMD/ATI forums have extensive topics about this so it may be worth checking that out. AMD Game Forums - ATI Radeon Graphics

Other things I have heard is that you need to go into your bios and check your +12v reading. If it's lower than 11.85v then it could be a power problem.

The only other solution I've heard (and it seems to work most of the time) is to RMA your graphics card and get a replacement.
