Can not get graphics card to work- help

Ok, I did what you said and it worked great. I guess i bought a new video card for nothing. Thumbs up to XFX, Ive been throwing this card around the last few days, not really taking much care with it, yet it still works.

Anyone want to buy a used video card? I dont suppose its worth much, I guess I can keep it around for a spare.

I went to download the nvidia driver for the 8600gt for vista 64 and save it before i try this and i find it rather incredible that its a 116MB download! doesnt that seem extremely huge for a driver download?

No, probably has the program to run the card and do tweeks, etc. Sounds like you are going in the right direction. If windows does not detect new hardware then something is up. Looks like you are on the right track for that 'something!' Glad it worked out.

Actually, I never got a windows detected new hardware message on reboot. but it works none the less

I stuumbled across that windows performance monitoring tool, or whatever it is, and it had a small note there that new hardware was detected, but never got the usual message on re-boot. Is this normal for Vista?

by the way , my graphics scores went from a average of 4.1 up to 5.7

that is wierd, because I score a 5.1 on my work laptop with integrated graphics from intel (as we know the worst for integrated graphics)

no... as I said, integrated graphics. but it has 3GB of ddr2 ram, core 2 duo, 1.8 Ghz its not bad, but you have a computer with a graphics card, it should kinda kill this...
especially when you can get it for $730AUD or $680USD (just checked then, Australia's Dollar has skyrocketed to about .86 USD)

my graphics rating was 5.9 and gaming graphics 5.5.

thats with a 8600GT, which isnt anywhere near the latest nor greatest graphics card, but still? maybe laptops use a different grading system, like against other laptops instead of against desktops

That could definitely be it. Or maybe with the rating system They add the average score for each component ie, the graphics gets added as a 1 if its good 1.1 if its really good or 0.5 if its dodgy. cpu same, ram, etc, etc. so the score will only make sense if you analyse the individual scores and not the aggregate value shown

You have to bare in my that when the WEI in Vista was coded, the 8600 wasn't considered old. Drivers also appear to have a bit of influence over the score.

At any rate, the main thing is that it's installed. Just double check in Device manager that there are no yellow triangles beside any display devices to ensure it was a 'clean hand over'.
