Well Richard my friend, that didn't go so well!
I selected a restore point the day before the problems started and now all I'm left with is a black screen of death!
The system boots and takes my password fine, but what should be my desktop, is nothing but a black field, I can see my cursor moving but but everything else is blackness!

any suggestions?

Bret

That is something that has never happend before. Can you get into safe mode? During boot tap f8 quickly and rapidly.

Actually I was wrong, when I restart (hard start) I see the green loading bar, then it goes to a black screen.
I was able to reboot and reach the option of safe mode, there is an option to repair computer as well??

What options do you see? If it says start up repair go for it and hope.

I'm looking at pulling the trigger on "Startup Repair"
My other options are- system restore, windows complete pc restore, windows memory diagnostic tool, command prompt and recovery manager.
The choice of buttons after selection are - shut down or re start

My Computer

If you can go for start up repair, take that choice.
If you did system restore correctly, there seems to be a problem there.

Definitely try Startup Repair - and hope for the best! I too have never seen thiis before either. Sorry for joining the "party" late - just got up for a few hours of work. How far back did you go with the System Restore? Do you have other restore points around the same time but still before the problem started?

Well startup repair didn't work, I went to recovery manager and I'm now in the "Gateway System Recovery"
my choices here are - recovery with automatic data backup or FULL FACTORY RECOVERY

My Computer

You lose your documents with full factory, is that a problem?
Full factory has a good record of working.
You will go back to day one. No documents, updates, SPs or anything.

That's underway, looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me on that box!
Not a problem in two years, then this really small problem turned ugly!
I'm signing off for the night, work tomorrow.
Thanks again for all your help, I'll report back tomorrow evening.
Bret
P.S. whats your thoughts on win 7?

My Computer

I had Windows 98 for years.
It saw its last legs
got Vista 2 years ago.
I wanted more
Went to 7, Oct last year
I love it.
It truly is what Vista should have been
Lot of eye candy, but also many good features.
Would enjoy to tell you more about it tomorrow.

I put this in an earlier post, but you may need it after the restore

Richard and all others who helped, Got my machine back up this evening after four grueling days! System restore with files was a no go, when the machine came back, I had no files anyway! and corrupt registry files or system files kept errors rearing their ugly heads! so I finally gave up and did a full system restore.
I want to thank all of you for taking time to help.
I thought I was pretty good about backing up, but I must admit, I have learned a valuable lesson.

Can you recommend a solid Complete "PC Backup application" software or hardware I have looked at a few, but would appreciate your input. I'm running Vista "Home Premium" and I don't have that option on board.

Thanks again
Bret

My Computer

I give you this suggestion and my own special idea
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

If you know that your machince is in good shape now, make a back up and put it away
Once a month make a back up and up date the next month

Have a problem you have a current backup

Cant use the current because of a virus etc. Use the one that you put away.

Luck
