Yes if they have a update, then update and delete everything but do not delete anything from your registry leave that alone.

What's the worst case scenario? Reformat drive? Upgrade to Win 7? No anti-virus program wants to install when I'm stuck in safe mode. I tried BitDefender's Online scan, but it came up clean. Hmmmm ....

Yes worst case would be that you have to do a factory restore but lets work on it and hopefully you won't have to go that far....

I'll use ccleaner once SUPER has finished it's job. There are now 185 instances of that Adware Tracking Cookie, but that Trojan looks really sinister. The scan should be complete in a few minutes (fingers crossed).

Okay, scan complete. I now have to reboot for the process to complete itself. Fingers crossed this will do something. When I get back after reboot I'll run ccleaner and see what happens.

The problem just won't go away. I did what SUPER wanted but still got the computer freeze, but this time without the fan whir. I ran ccleaner, but haven't rebooted yet. I'll do a complete scan with Malwarebytes' software now.

What do you mean by Factory Restore? Is that similar to reformating and re-installing Vista? Or is it a softer option. At this stage I don't mind losing my software (I can always put it back and I have my important files backed up).

For some reason I can't run Malwarebytes program. It gives an error: Runtime Error '0' and Runtime Error '440'. It ran okay an hour ago!

A factory restore means just that you would be returning it to the factory specs, just like being brand new. I will give you a couple of tutorials to read on system restore.

Just read them, it's not hard to do just a lot of time involved, reinstalling all of your software, games, documents, etc.

But lets still see what can be done so you don't have to go that far. You might think about downloading this security.

It's free and suppose to be really good, even some members have it installed on their system and they love it, that and malwarebytes. Give me a update as soon as you can. LOL

As I said, Microsoft Security Essentials will not install while I'm stuck in Safe Mode.

I'm pretty much at wit's end. I wish I could provide more information or try something else, because this BSOD (or whatever it is) started happening only yesterday after being stable for almost three years. I feel I haven't done anything out of the usual, except join the high-speed Internet club (I've been dial-up before last week - don't laugh). I suspect that it's a simple fix. Maybe virus related. Maybe an internal conflict of some sort. I've run out of ideas.

IS there any other information I can provide to help narrow down this problem?

Would doing a chkdsk /f from the start menu help?

As you can guess, I'm running out of ideas (and knowledge).

Could it be a hardware driver issue? The reason I say this is because the only bit of hardware I recently attached to my machine was an ADSL modem. In the device manager there is an error with a network adapter called 6TO4 adapter. And it says: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Now, I don't understand why this might be a problem because I've been surfing the Net on this device for a week without apparent problems. What would happen if I select 'Update Driver'?

Yes, still trying to work this thing out. I know you guys are either busy or asleep, but it seems I'm alone in this dark Vista forest.

Okay, I let it look for an updated driver, but it came back saying I had the latest driver. What the? Oh well.

Where can I invoice Bill Gates and Microsoft for all my lost hours???

Just because I like the sound of my own typing and I don't have much hair left to pull out, I was wondering if there is anything on my Vista DVD that I can use to gain more information. I mean, why can't Vista atleast tell me what it thinks might be causing the problem? I'm guessing it's a single item (virus/driver/etc) that has suddenly decided to make life hard for me.

I'll give this problem two more days and then I'm going to reformat my drive ... and wait for a new Vista issue to come along. Then I'm going to do what Microsoft no doubt have wanted me to do all along - upgrade to Win 7 Pro x64.

I just followed the advice in BSOD Posting, downloaded and ran the little Windows NT6 ... file and it generated that jcgriff2 folder. However, I couldn't get the START/Perfmon /report to work. It says: The system cannot find the path specified. There is a space between Perfmon and the forward slash? I can go to the performance monitor, but don't know what to do - it does not have a save to HTML feature.

Admittedly, the steps you suggest seem too complex and I've been at this for most of the day. I think I have to admit defeat if this is where I have to go with fixing my problem. Besides, I'm tired and frustrated. Maybe I'll give it a go tomorrow. Most likely I'll either reformat and re-install or pay someone to do it. I just wish there was an easier way ...

See if DDS will run a scan ...

Download DDS from one of these links:
Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3

• Disable any script blocking protection
• Double click the dds icon to run the tool.
• When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt <--- will be minimized in the task tray
• Save both reports to your desktop.

Include the contents of both logs in your next post.
