The specs do not list Vista 64-bit as a supported OS so perhaps they have trouble with it on 64-bit. Oddly enough it is supported on XP 64-bit which is more problematic than Vista 64 bit, at least in terms of device compatibility. None the less Vista 64 bit isn't listed so I would contact Epson.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner - Product Information - Epson America, Inc.

According to their website, the driver I am trying to install is supposed to work with Windows Vista 64-bit. However, it is becoming apparent that it does not. Even according to Epson's website there is a "known issue" with this driver and Windows Vista. I had to do some digging to find that one. Unfortunately, their "fix" was directing me to the MicroSoft support website, where a "fix" was supposedly available. Well, I downloaded the fix (it was some update to Windows Vista- something with "KB" and a string of numbers). When I tried to install it, I got a message saying that it "didn't apply" to my system. The MicroSoft site also suggesting checking with Epson! So, it's a "known issue" with all the classic buck-passing going on as no one wants to be responsible for it. So I guess that's the end of it. I'll return it and purchase a different brand, and do thorough research for "known issues" in advance! I can't believe that with all the complex technology and software generated every year, I can't install a simple scanner driver on my home PC. I'm stuck with MicroSoft, but I won't be shopping Epson again, that's for sure.
Thanks to everyone who responded, but I've wasted your time and way too much of mine trying to figure this out!

I had similar problem with my Canon printer. This is how I resolved it: Not sure which version of vista you have, so there are two solutions.

Option one: Scan using Windows Fax and Scan
Click the Windows icon ( ), click Programs , and then click Windows Fax and Scan .
NOTE: The Windows Fax and Scan option is available in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista. If you have the Home Basic or Home Premium edition of Windows Vista, skip to Option two: Scan using Paint .
Click New scan .
Click File , and then click Scan .
Option two: Scan using Paint
Click the Windows icon ( ), click Programs , and then click Accessories .
Click Paint .
Click File , and then click From Scanner or Camera .
Click Scan .

Good luck, I wasted about 5 hours trying to figure this out.

Thanks for this, but I returned the scanner. I'm going to try my luck with a different brand. If I encounter problems with it, I may try your suggestion.
