My P5B needed to be flashed to 1902 to recognise my Q6600 Quad Core. I am currently flashed to 2001. I still lean to the theory that the problem is in the CD\DVD Drive. I just replaced my Lite-on for that very reason with a Pioneer.

I agree with you that it's most likely. Imho it never hurts to try to sort the old stuff first anyway. (Unless it's a critical problem leading to huge losses of income or something like that)

Reading my P5B tutorial I was able to see the Bios setup by taping the delete button.

In the BIOS set up it says :

SATA 1 (ST3320620AS) for the SATA hard drive

SATA 2, 3,4 are undetected.

As a side note the SATA are configured as IDE.

I had a good BD/CD/DVD drive not show in similar fashion in my ASUS BIOS because I had introduced an unformatted drive into my system. My "C" drive had started to show bad sectors so I bought a replacement to ghost it to. When I unhooked one of my other 2 drives and inserted the unformatted one, all of a sudden the only drive recognized was my slightly defective "C" drive.

I would try the drive on it's own before I wrote it off.

You have a STA HDD and an IDE CD/DVD RW connected? The SATA drive reads as an IDE on the Asus P5B unless you have JMicron enabled. As this is the RAID setup it shouldn't be enabled.

So I should just disable JMicron SATA Controller if its set to enable?

Yeah, I'm not completly ready to wrote it off. I'll try any remaining solutions and see what could have caused all this. If nothing works then I'm okay to buy another drive.
I never inserted another drive into my system. I don't remember doing anything to the system before my problems with the CD/DVD drive. I've been cautious about that because I don't know much about computer and I don't want to accidently cause something bad.

Safe BIos settings for this MOBO are

BIOS - MAIN IDE Cofig - IDE
Advanced - Onboard Devices - JMicron SATA/PATA Controller - Enabled
JMicronSata Controller Mode IDE

The Jmicron driver is known to cause problems with CD/DVD Drives, but usually the Write function is affected and the most common problem is that the controller does not recognize a DVD Reader/Writer, showing only a CD. I do not know enough about this driver to recommend you to disable or unistall it. This might give you other problems. I do know the Vista Driver is better.
