Choice of 24" monitor

Yeah, sounds like a return job.....Any chance you can get one where you can check the monitor before you leave the shop....I've done this a few times and the sales people are always happy to do it. It saves a lot of potential disappointment later on and of course the hassle of returning it if it's defective.

Thanks to you all for your input. I RMAd the Samsung for a refund and went to Scan, which I discovered is only a half hour drive from me, and bought a Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP.
Without the postage it worked out about £70 more expensive but looks amazing and I'm very pleased so far. There doesn't seem to be any ghosting or lag in games, no banding or contrast shifts etc.
I believe it's an S-PVA panel rather than TN and it certainly has a larger viewing angle which is handy as I'm also using it for TV and video. I think it'll also play BluRay discs so I better start saving for a player.
