Choosing Manual Windows Updates

Your patience is paying off at least for me!! Thank you.

So, do I hide all the ones I am not installing immediately and pull them one by one for installation (since many said the computer may need to restart).

Does the list go away when the system reboots or does it remain until you do something with it ie install or hide?

Is there a quick way to see a list of restore points? And the current disk space allotted? vs the command prompt info you showed me? I thought there was a certain amount of space by default and only the older Restore Points were eliminated?

Not installed updates should be hid. It is best to install one by one
The list should not be lost on reboot

Also, I don't understand why the published date would be so old? Is that typical?

The reason is for some reason they were not installed on a timely basis.

I hope you can see where my confusion is - if it was on auto update how or why would that happen? And now, am I going to try and install something that is too old? So I guess you typically do not see something dated so old?

Even with automatic update, it tries to install, but then due to errors etc, it does not.
To see list of updates
type updates in search
then go to windows upadate
and then check update history, see if it is installed already
If old and not marked as important,, just hide it.
If marked importatant give me the KB number and date.

Thank you - that sounds like a good exercise for me to understand them better. I looked at History quickly and all but one have been successful until I went back some time (mid 2009) many failed.

I will work on this and give you (hopefully) a thumbs up tomorrow.

Thank you so much for explaining it a bit further.:)

Dont forget that SP2 contains all the updates until a few weeks before it was released in final version.
Any updates prior to about the first week in March 09 are included in the SP2 and do not have to be installed.

Thank you for that additional info on SP2. So this is what happened (so far all is good!):

*During our conversation, I think I panicked and changed the settings in Auto Update back to Auto.
*Husband inadvertently shut down computer when he was done (thinking we were done)
*Apparently all went well with the updates
*PSI came up this morning with a .NET update and redirected to MS
*checked my update status and sure enough new update was there
*installed, rescan & PSI is back to 100%

With all due respect, I think it may be best for me at this point to stay with auto update untill I check to be certain System Restore is happening successfully and Points are listed. Since I had to install the .NET manually, I was able to witness that it did a System Restore before the install (I hope that is a good sign).

I have a few questions, if possible:

*For Updates (not sure if I had changed anything): My current settings are for 'Recommended' and 'Microsoft' (not sure if I added 'MS' last night or if it was already checked)

*Windows Live is marked as an important update, but last night was not checked and I was not planning to install as I use Outlook w/Business Contact Manager. Would this an Update to 'Hide'?

*Failed twice and then eventually successful Vista x64 (KB968389)

* Failed June 17, 2009, but was successful on July 12, 2009 - SP2 for x64 (KB948465)

While going through the log - I noticed all updates were 'Important' none were 'Recommended', until last night - I guess that answers my earlier question. Do I conclude Auto Install typically good for Important Updates only (and uncheck the others?)

Sorry for all the questions, but when updates fail, they do attempt again (although on some, I noticed there was quite a difference in the date). I was also impressed with PSI - I guess I did not expect to see it pick up on the MS update - this is one of those programs I would never have found (or looked for) without the forum - seems to be an incredible tool!

Thanks again for helping me discover how this works!

EDIT: I m currently receiving notice for Java Updates (on both systems) - is it best to just do these updates?

Sorry this is late -

Thanks, all went well with the updates.

Although, the Java update has been coming up automatically, this morning it did not. I had trouble with the quick link to update on the Windows 7 computer, but went to Start menu and quickly found Java which brought up the Java window and I manually did the update.

I tried the same on the Vista (search menu) and it just gives me a Folder icon, when clicked shows 3 other folders: Classes, Packages, TrustLib? (under OS) - didn't think I should be there.

Greatly appreciate your input.

Oh, yes - I have that - my favorite new toy! That was so easy to install and has been incredible. It was that program that detected the .NET was not updated - I was impressed. So with this, I actually don't have to worry about updating Java etc - it totally takes care of it?

You had done a post around the time Jacee had me download PSI and I have been anticipating getting back there. You suggested another program in conjuction with PSI and that caught my attention as well.

Thank you again!

Sorry I haven't been back sooner and thank you for the clarification.

Java update appeared again today, but when I chose to update - it failed. I was looking at the log (Secunia) and it does show Java patched/updated as well as 'AU' which is only on some programs (I assumed that meant Auto Update - but then I know I shouldn't assume anything).

The other program you spoke about was WinPatrol - sounded like a must.

Thanks again!
