Solved Compromised Logon facility, caused by Stardock

Based upon your post, I think that may be the solution. Use Revo to get rid of all of it, including the registry entries.

Well, I've discovered that I already have the latest version of DigitalPersona installed, so I'll have to uninstall it and then install it once more.

What I do find puzzling is that there appears to be a conflict between LogonUI.exe and Authui.dll. The versions do not match:
Faulting application LogonUI.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791960d, faulting module authui.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e040d2, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000000000037ef7, process id 0x84c, application start time 0x01cd3213b9462ec0.

So, I'm thinking this is the problem... somehow the wrong versions have been cross linked.

Uninstalling DigitalPersona fixed the fault! There is no longer any conflict reported between LogonUI.exe and authui.dll. Brilliant.

Well, assuming that the Stardock installation compromised Digital Persona, I'm going to install the Logon Studio first, then install Digital Persona. Maybe that'll prevent things from going awry. At least if that doesn't work, I know that all I have to do is reinstall Digital Persona after removing Stardock to get back.

No... but what I really want is to change the background of my logon screen. I want something darker, and I found a terrific one. I'm amazed that Microsoft doesn't let you change this. From what I've learned, the image file is embedded in imageres.dll and apparently Logon Studio somehow bypasses the use of this file for the background. Some people edit the file imageres.dll file directly, which I do not feel comfortable doing...

Anyway, with the conflict between Digital Persona and Stardock, I'm afraid I can't use this software... I'm awaiting to hear from people on the Stardock forums, but I'm guessing it unlikely anybody will really care.

I lucked out. Despite some peculiar install glitches with Digital Persona (I had to explicitly grant modify rights to two files it had deposited in System32\en-US), and having to uninstall it twice, somehow I am back to normal. I can log in via keyboard or finger swipe, and the fingerprint icon shows status messages again.

I have opened a topic on the Stardock forums, in hopes of finding out more... and a possible work around to this. Meanwhile, I will make an image of my current installation for safe keeping. Thanks for the support along the way.

You are very welcome and thanks again for the rep, it is really appreciated by the members.
If you make the back up copy and update every couple of weeks, you will never have a serious problem again. No matter what happens you can restore the image if necessary.

No problem, Rich. Actually, this was a beneficial experience as I resolved it without too much loss of time and got a stern reminder of how important it is to have a system backup (not just documents and media). I'll definitely be doing a system copy periodically from now on.
