Dell photo AIO 964 Printer

I have a Dell Vista home basic inspiron Desk top. I have 32 bit. I have my XP harddrive installed on it , also. It was working fine until one day, it decided it didn't want to work like it should. First of all, it does not show on the left side of my startup. It shows printer on the right side, with my other programs. I can't pin it to the startup, because it doesn't give me the option. The only way I see DEll AIO is when I go to printers. It has a check mark on it, so it is set to default. It does not show me anything about where to send my scans to or anything about the printer. The only thing it shows me is what is printing. It will print now, but when I go to scan something, it comes up on the printer itself, that it is downloading scan applications from the computer. It gives me 3 choices where to send it to. Either to clipboard, e-mail or file. I can't find what I scanned anywhere . I have my Owner's manual that came with the printer, but it doesn't do any good. It tells me to go to start --programs--dell Printers_Dell Phot AIO, but it does not open on my computer.
I have uninstalled it, unplugged it from the outlet, took the USB out of my computer. I reinstalled it, and I didn't plug it back in to the computer until it said to connect the printer to the computer. I have the cd that came with the printer (DRIVERS AND UTILITIES).
When it worked before this happened, it came up on my screen where I could send it to and it showed me the preview of what was scanning. That is history!
I am a little dense when it comes to software and drivers. Would you believe, I installed the XP harddrive myself? That was simple, compared to this. I installed the XP hard drive when I bought the new computer with Vista. It worked fine until lately. I have windows update automatically. I don't know if something updatwd and did this.
I would greatly appreciate it, if someone could just tell me what I could do, to fix the problem.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

First run a full AV...
Download and run a full scan of malwarebytes...

Run a sfc on your computer, you do it like this:

Open the start menu...
In your search box type cmd...
Then right click on the command box and run it as administrator...
Type sfc /scannow in the command prompt, notice there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash,,if it comes back with errors then run it 3 times. Don't click or use your computer while running the sfc...
Report back to us when you are finished...
