Snipping Tool is quick and easy. There's a link in the tutorial showing how to use it. Basically you run it and click New and it is a rectangular region by default. The rest of the tutorial is just about attaching the image to your post.

I was reading the thread and came to your response. That was my question also.

The icons are provided by the software that they're related to. Bobbyscot- if you go to the .exe for the file that starts the software and right click on it, you can select Send To and then Desktop. The software should provide the icon. If the shortcut works but the icon is overlayed with what you're describing, then there's something else going on (obviously).

Wither3, I agree. As I said previously, uninstalling/installing again a particular software, should I reckon show its icon. However it still remains "overlayed", as in my case, something is wrong. Thanks.

Go to search and type snipping tool. Search is by the Windows Start Button, lower left.

rich46, typing "snipping tool" at start shows file originated by myself, but fails to open.

Personalise, Change Desktop Icons, under samples - top row 5th icon is as all my icons are showing, the music bars being replaced with a box showing three symbols. "Snipping Tool" is not available in my version of Vista as quoted in "Tutorials".

Just press the Print Screen key then paste into any image editor(e.g. paint, irfanview,photofiltre etc)

Paint shows "Paint cannot read this file, This is not a valid bitmap file or its format is not currently supported".

click on Start, Programs, Accessories. The Snipping Tool should be there. If you click on it when the screen you want to capture is available, then your screen will become opaque. Click on a corner of the screen which will include the part of the screen you wish to capture and hold down the mouse button and then drag it to an opposite (diagonal) corner of the screen which will include the rest of the screen which you want to capture and release the button. Click on File, Save As and give it a name (note the location). You can then post that as an attachment.

If you do as mentioned by MileAhead, then open Paint. Click on the screen and right click, paste. Then click on File, Save As and save the file for attachment here.

In Accessories, there is not shown Clipping Tool. I read that not all versions of Vista has Clipping Tool as default.

Wither3, thank you for suggestion. I started by going to Control Panel>Programs&Features>Turn Windows Features on-off>Continue>Scroll down to Tablet PC Optional Components, check box is ticked (in my case unticked)>Click box>Click OK - and wait. Return to Start>All Programs> Accessories> Snipping tool, now showing and active. Desktop Icons are now displaying in original form, after using a package "iconpackager_public". Unfortunately said icons, now show an arrow bottom left of icon. Suggestions as to how arrows can be removed? Software FxVisor32 fails to work removing arrows due to reporting "error".

I'm on vacation so I don't have time to research all this stuff. As I mentioned before, it you find the .exe for any program you have a desktop icon for and right click on it, you should be able to use Send To, Desktop to create a desktop shortcut. The icon for that would come form the program itself and shouldn't have an arrow. In the past, you said you did an uninstall/reinstall but that isn't necessary for this purpose.

Ah- I thought he was referring to arrows different than the default.

ilikefree, it is a very good tool that I used over the years, however for some unknown reason, this tool no longer works on my computer, displaying "error, close down computer".
