Run chkdsk however you want.

Also, run the tool from the manufacturer of your external hard disk. Most are listed here: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Ideally yes. To stop any confusion, you should have run chkdsk once at the very start of this topic, and once again after that. Twice is enough, but it does not always pick up all errors in one go, and we can see the progression of errors.

You should also run a hard drive checking tool, and once is enough. Can you tell me whether it passes or fails.

Try this Seagate tool (Seatools for Windows). It should work on any hard disk, including External hard disks (USB and Firewire) If your hard disk does not show up this time, then there is something wrong. | Seagate

well, it's been running for more than 15-20 mins, yet, the outer scan loading bar isn't even half loaded

This may indicate an issue. Leave it a bit longer, and is it still has not moved, close the Task.

I ran short generic twice, and both times it failed.

i ran long DST tho, it passed.

and after running these tests, i ran malwarebytes, and it's taking an AWFULLY long time and keeps hanging. what's more, when i extract photos from winrar. zip files or copy-and-paste it from my computer onto the external HD, the picture becomes unviewable or warped (eg. half of the picture is black, the picture gets abit jumbled up)

This is looking more and more like a failing hard disk. Everything points to this. I think you are just going to have to accept that it is dead. Make sure your important data is backed up to more than just this hard disk.

it's so strange, irritating and ironic. you buy something that backs up info in case ur computer fails, and then the external drive goes failing on you, and you have to get it replaced every few years??
