Do you have the latest drivers from nvidia site.

GeForce Release 178

Of course. I installed it after I cleaned the old drivers with driver sweeper in Vista and Driver Cleaner Pro in XP 32bit (I have dual boot).

Right now I installed the Beta drivers offered in 3DGuru on my XP partition and some of the issues like graphic tearing up in Counter Strike Source are gone but this driver is not working well in Vista 64 for me. (don't worry, I downloaded the corresponding driver for my OS).

Now I get this error randomly. I don't even have to use a special program!!
WTF?!

I always downloaded the drivers from Nvidia web site. The recent driver is: 178.24 for the 9xxx series.

My GPU is made by Gigabyte, so I went into Gigabyte website and I see that the recent driver is: 175.16.

Gigabyte is not following the updates by Nvidia?

Do you think that that might cause the problem I'm experiencing? Could it be that Gigabyte didn't release the updated driver since it causing problem with their manufactured GPU?

I hope installing the driver from Gigabyte web site will fix this issue.

Gil80, again, this may not be your solution, it seems that it was mine though since I haven't had the issue since I did it.

I have an Acer AL2216W, for this particular model, Acer does not offer a Vista x64 driver. Now, they also have another similar model to mine, the Acer AL2216WD, this one has a x64 driver and apparently, the only difference is that the latter one has DVI options and mine doesn't it.

Since I have nothing to loose, I went ahead and tried it and I have been error free for more than a week now (where's that damn wood when you need it! ;)).

I don't know if you are going to be as lucky as I am and find a similar situation with your LCD but it is worth a try I think.

Good luck.

I got this a lot when playing Second Life, but if I install a graphics driver while in safe mode, I'll never get it.

just a suggestion,
try disabling User Account Control, some nVidia drivers for the latest cards conflict randomly with vista UAC. Its an imbecile solution to an imbecile problem but it worked for me. I guess it's a vista problem since i tested 3 nvidia cards (Quadrofx 5600, Geforce 8800 ultra, Ceforce 8800 gts) an i got consistent results before and after disabling uac.
Anyway I can play smoothly now.
