Explorer Crashes Constantly...

You know, I was starting to believe that too, because it only has one fan. Usually the front where the HD is gets very warm, like warm enough to heat up the top of the lappy by the touchpad. Other than that I would say no. The area by the fan is pretty cool to touch on the bottom. Just checked :)

Does anyone else experience this? It seems to be pretty big...

[EDIT] I used autoruns to disable the mail service, and everything to do with the mail, I dont use it. But there was still a context menu for it. I found where the context menu was for that and deleted it so now when I right click a file it only says Send To... Zip or CD/DVD drive. Seems to have worked but idk yet. It took 6 hours for the other change to take place. :(

Nope didnt work, it just crashed. Gah. Well hmm, should I restore to factory again? Hasn't helped since I started having this problem. I wish I had the original Vista disks. Is this just some Vista bug or is it just my lappy? My friend has a Toshiba 17" lappy and it never did that. Ever. So is there some kind of software installed on my computer not liking Vista right now?

Now I can't right click at all...

[EDIT] I found a few threads saying that I needed to uninstall the Intel HD sound drivers, reboot, then let windows find a new one of its own, did that, haven't had problems since. Other threads just suggested ShellExView, so I disabled most of he context menus that weren't MS. Hopefully it stops.

When I uninstall the Intel driver from the device manager then reboot, it installs the same driver. If I don't install anything it just has that yellow triangle or a gray box showing that it is disabled. Without that driver I still get sound so should I just delete it? Or is that not even possible? lol

I'm only posting this because it just crashed again...

[EDIT] first time of resetting the HD audio driver it installed the Intel driver again, so I had to disable it while Windows was searching for a 'Preconfigured' driver then it installed a pure windows driver. No problems since. [Knock on wood]

Okay. I've been running for over 12 hours now with no problems [knock on wood]. So it is safe to say that this issue is solved. Steps taken:

>Turn DEP on 'For all programs and services'

>Let Vista install a MS driver for the audio [Intel to MS]
>Supposedly driver shipped with some machine has incompatibilities with Vista

Those two changes have made a big difference. Thanks to everyone who helped out and posted in this thread. But its solved!

Sorry to re-open this thread but as some of you may know I had to perform systm recovery because of a corrupted boot-mgr (Obviously a rookie mistake.) Anyways I'm still experiencing this issue. If I search google there is a plethora of information about it --mostly SP1 and prior tho-- so I'm wondering if this is a software conflict?

If there aren't that many threads in here about it and it doesn't seem to happen to everyone, its something with my configuration and machine.

So what information do you guys need? This is really annoying. I don't really use this laptop for much. Forums, email, internet radio, rare photo edit, rarely do I view movies.

Like I stated previously, it's mainly when I right click the desktop, a file, or a folder. But its not a context menu, as all of them are disabled except AVG. I have also disabled AVG with no change in behavior.. Help is greatly appreciated as I know it has to be something simple. But I like Vista and definitely don't want to switch out when I'm finally able to help others lol :p

EDIT: I just noticed that 90% of my explorer crashes are from ntdll.dll so should I boot into Ubuntu, delete it, then replace it from a different Vista. A Vista that works lol.

I also uninstalled IDT (Sigmatel) Sound drivers and the Control Panel Applet. I have read in a few places that Sigmatel audio is a major cause. So now all of my touch sensitive buttons work but mute. Oh well, I didn't use that button that much anyway. Its just the fact that if that driver and application being removed fixes it, I have to compromise functionality to have a stable system. And my speakers sound like garbage now. Ugh.

The sound drive is named: IDT High Definition CODEC

I have a 2 year warranty, might as well take it back and see what they do, if they just perform system recovery I wont even take it home

I've searched, searched, oh and searched some more and no real definitive answer has came up. But I do know that it didn't do it before SP2. Before SP2 my laptop literally never crashed. I'm not sure if that helps or not.

I just dropped it off and they're "fixing it" under warranty. So we'll see. They gave me a loaner to use, works quite well... As a paper weight.

Hopefully they replace the laptop. Then Win7 :) If they don't oh well, I'll try to figure it out.

I'm using my sisters 32bit Vista machine and it never has this issue. So what program do I have is causing incompatibility with the shell? This machine has a lot of software on it, doesn't get maintained very well and yet it still just works. I'll keep digging.

I will when I get it back. I'm using a loaner lappy atm.

***EDIT*** I'm going to install avast! instead of AVG when I get it back. IIRC avast! produced BSOD's but never crashed explorer. Hopefully the BSOD phase is gone.

Using the loaner laptop, I just finished uninstalling all of the HP junk. I also installed SP2 and all of the programs I use. And guess what? Explorer just crashed when I right clicked the desktop. So it has to be something I have configured or installed.

CH

you might want to re-install w sp1 and hold off on sp2. then add things a couple at a time till the crashes start. then you will know. You 32bit or 64?

Of the things you installed I dont see many troubling items, but im not familiar with all of them.

Let me know if I can help

Ken
