msconfig is just the utility that offers you option to see what is starting, and to disable it. But if it is malware, it will just autostart itself anyways.

H2S04 wants to to perform a selective startup

Hi Sean,

What is the exact model number of your laptop, and how much RAM (memory) have you got installed?

You were spoon-fed into your teens, weren't you ;)

If you start MSCONFIG, either from safe or normal modes (doesnt matter), the "diagnostic" and "selective" options will be right there on the first tab. Use the "diagnostic" mode first. If after a reboot into normal mode your app startup speed is now fine, bring up MSCONFIG again, this time go "selective" and have a bit of a play with ticking and unticking a few things at a time, then rebooting, until you think you've zeroed-in on the culprit.

I'd still suggest you try removing the AV early on in your troubleshooting. Other than a virus, the anti-virus is actually the most likely cause. I find it ironic too.

Ok. So here's what I'm going to do as I'm getting a TON of different directions. First I'm going to uninstall my current AV. Then, using my other PC, I'm going to download and burn the "Eset SysRescue bootable disk" and boot from the disk. Then download the new AV. Then run the MSCONFIG. Anything I'm missing or are my steps out of order?

I would do this first:

use the recovery disk- it may resolve most issues.
then boot up Windows, uninstall Vipre, reinstall Avira or Avast- update it, and run a full scan.
then install and run malwarebytes.

then perform the performance defrag/diskcheck.

If the problem is still there then go into msconfig, and do diagnostic/selective startup.

if nothing works, then you may have bad memory/Windows/data corruption, and that will require RAM replacement and/or reinstallation of Vista

The suggestions are not in any major conflict. We can't tell what's causing your problem yet, so you'll need to experiment a bit with all those steps and give us some feedback.

Personally, the intended sequence you've listed seems fine to me.
