getting pretty frustrated. first is this site safe. in other words, because of past experiences, i am apprehensive of anything that advertises help or free. secondly, my question involves the search function with vista. i've always been with xp or at least for a long time and search was easy to find. how do i find search in xp.

Hello Ronnieg,

Welcome to Vista Forums. I've been here over a year with no problems safety wise. I'm sure you'll find lots of helpful and friendly people here.

In Vista search is easy. Hit the windows logo key and start typing your search term/s. You'll notice that they will appear in the search box at the bottom of the start menu. This won't be there if you have classic menus checked in the options. Also in windows explorer there is a search box at the top right, next to the address bar.

Hope you enjoy your stay. Check out the tutorials section for lots of tips and tweaks.

gary, i spoke too soon at least in one respect...not for thanking you for your willingness to help. i do appreciate. I hit the logo at the bottom and initially the search function was there. i turned the laptop off and on and when it came on the search function was not there. I do not know which options you are referring to so that i can check to see if the menu you pinpointed is checked. again, thanks for any help. ron.

Hi Ron,

Right click on the start button and choose properties. Make sure that classic menu is not checked.

Is there a search bar in Windows explorer?

Edit: Also in start menu properties try clicking on use default settings.

I can't find any way to get rid of the search bar on the start menu.

Just another thought, might try clicking on classic menu and apply and then back to start menu and ok. See if that does anything.
