GeForce 8800GT ? failure

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

+1 for GPU-Z :

techPowerUp! :: Downloads

It's free and can log your temps.

Maybe you should check your event viewer logs to see if something else is causing the driver to crash.

(Start>type : Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events)

Look for a common 'Faulting Module Path' in the application Crash and see if it points to a particular file , usually a .dll or .exe

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

Thanks and sorry to be dense but I have installed the Everest software and can see the main CPU temperature 32C but I cant see the graphics card temp.

My Computer

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

OK I got the techpowerup and it shows GPU temp 57C PCB temp 44C then GPU 49.8 and PCB 44.5 does that make sense. Couldn't see any particular file implicated in event viewer.

50c is pretty good idle. ;)

now stress it graphically (a good test is 3dmark06) & try to recreate the error, you say you've never touched the fanspeed so leave that stock.....

do you ever hear the 8800 fan speeding up..???

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

Yes ran the test and it failed (twice) "3DDevice9::present failed device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST) and the message as before "Display Driver nvlddmkm stopped responding ans was successfully recovered." but no crash. Temp went up to 67 - 52, 52 - 51. I never noticed the fan speeding up. What now? Thanks for the help.

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

73c on the GPU is warm, but not dangerously so.

That DD3DERR_DEVICELOST looks like it may be a DirectX error.

Just a thought, but have you tried downloading the latest DirectX 9.0c redistributable?

Download details: DirectX Redist (August 2009)

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

I loaded the updated DirectX but when I ran the test again I got 29 seconds into it and got the same result. Strewth!

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

I have to admit, I'm running out of ideas myself

Have you had any re-occurrence of 'artifacts' ?

If not, I still suspect a software issue, rather than a h/ware one. As to what it is...

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

Nothing so far except when stress tested! I tried my MS Flight Sim with no issues on highest graphics settings. I've also upgraded the driver to the latest one - let's see what happens. I might be back...
Thanks again

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

one more thing goto your bios advanced settings , look up pci/e frequency , if its set to "auto" set it manaully to 100 , and the same if its any setting other than 100

the driver fail message plagued vista users for many months on its release and some still have issues with it , its just a case of covering all the bases making sure everything is as it should be

it seems it has reverted back to yuor original problem , the bluescreens you were encountering are due to the same error , vista will try for a set ammount of time (i forget but its in milliseconds) to reset your driver on a serious fault if it cant it will blue screen giving you your "timeout" message

your vista is up to date yes?

Re: GeForce GTX 295 ? failure

Thanks - I'll give that a go. Today the system rebooted 3 times when idle. Each time the system blamed the video driver (even with different drivers installed). Is it starting to look like a hardware issue? Would it all get better if I just put a new card in? Which one would you recommend for about £60 -£70?

Hope this makes sense. This only started when TuneUp utilities advised me that I should change the resolution of my display to Max. (1280x1024) from 1280x960. No problems before, then all this stuff. I've gone back to 1280x960 and (so far) no failures. ?Possible cause?
Archie- I looked for pci/e in the setup but it does no seem to be there on my DEll xps 420.
Also I do not have Vista sp2 installed - Tried it then had to go back as my internet wouldn't work!
