Graphics Card Recommendation

i c... well I'm not sure what your system is.. I'm not sure how you set things.. but I've had 2 Nvidia products and both worked great for me.. can't complain. This new 8600GT I've had has worked wonders.. plays very well, Crysis looks pretty darn good. all specs were on medium. and counterstrike played amazingly well.. I had no problems with it. the only problem was my Processor, and my Mobo... now that I've built a new machine with a good Mobo and a good CPU, a Q6700 I think the card will work even better.. thats why I want to upgrade.. when I had my AMD dual core 3800+ people said the 8800 would be overkill and would be limited by the CPU.. and now I'm getting the Quad core.. and it's the 8600 that will do the limiting.. so thats why I'm moving up.. whats equal in ATI to the 8600, and whats equal to the 8800's or the 9800 GX2..


also I didn't wanna kno what was better.. cuz I'm not really sure.. but i kno I wanna use Nvidia..

I had ATI in my last machine and I had a few problems, nothing major, with it. I'm happy with the nVidia I have now.

Ya.. so I just got a perfectly Fine and working BFG 8800 GTS OC Edition 640MB GFX card.. for get this ****..

$45 Bucks.. plus my old 8600GT.. that I payed $60 bucks for, with a 30 dollar amazon.com gift card.. so basically I got the 8800 GTS OCE for $105

Not bad huh Bubba.. so I guess I don't need your 9800GX2 anymore.

Well I want it.. but I don't NEEED it.

I'll still take it off you when you do your new build here soon tho. when you get your new Nvidia GT200 line..

Wonder if I can get a second 8800 GTS KO 512 MB at a ridiculously low price with my ATI x1650 Pro 512 MB as a trade in like Gunter did?

I could then run them SLI...oh, wait, that'd kill my dual 19" CRT setup wouldn't it? *bummer*

Nvidia has better drivers than ATI right now. I use a 8800 GTS 640MB. Oblivion is incredible.

ya get a deal like mine.. and you will be happy. Mine is great.. I wasn't sure how it would do in 3Dmark06 but it went fine.. With everything stock Q6700, with a BFG 8800 GTS stock. and 2GB stock Ram so everything is stock speeds. NO oc.. tjhe CPU, card and RAM all stock

my 3Dmark06 score was 10,991 or something... so just barely barely under 11K. and thats with the demo, so I can't adjust the settings and set them for an optimal score like some do. All default. but so far thats a pretty damn good score for the little work I've done. and having nothing Oc'd and very little ram. will be better with my CPU small OC to 3.33GHz, and with 4GB ram..

I'll post back with that score also.

lol well, that was tricky.. here in the States there is something called Craigslist.org.. I look on there all the time for random things locally.. and I found a guy with the 8800 GTS OCE.. but he was not selling it. He was selling his entire system.. so i emailed him interested.. and asked about the entire system. and the GFX card.. he said he didn't kno much about it, and that he got it with a lot of other parts a freind helped him get.. he built it for a class in a community college for an IT tech.. so he didn't kno mugch about it.. except that it cost alot.. lol..

so after I realized what it was.. I said I only wanted it.. he said no, cuz he didn't think he could sell his system without a video card.. so i offered to give him my old card.. thats just one model below his.. my 8600GT.. and some cash. then I'd have what I want.. and he'd have an entire system to sell.. plus he wouldn't miss it cuz he never used it, he used his laptop.. the idea makes sense.. he'd still have a full system for sale. just different card. and he agree'd.

he also said it was a GTX.. but it wasn't.. so when I went to meet him. and give him 100 cash, and my 8600.. I realized it was a GTS.. but the OC edition. witch is pretty darn close to bein as good as the GTX.. but still, its not. so I told him that's a big deal.. and that I wasn't going to pay 100.. so he asked for 50.. and I only had a 100 dollar bill.. and 45 bucks. so I gave him 45 and was done.. I tested it first.. worked great.. it works perfectly fine, runs at a decent temp. and worked fine in 3dmark06.

so ya, sorry for so long, but thats how that all went down.. pretty cool if you ask me!! HEHEHE

So, Speaking about Graphics Cards... Does anyone have any info about Nvidia's new Lineup.. the GTX 280 and GTX 260 or whatever.. thats the names we've been hearing.. 256 stream processors. fun stuff like that..

If anyone kno's some more info on these new bad boys feel free to share, I've been waiting and finding info on them is still a rare thing.. so share the info if have any..

Oh well if you want the 9800GX2.. most likely you should wait til new cards.. and that $500 card will be 380 or so I'm thinkin..

I've seen the second picture you linked to.. not sure if it's a real picture or not. but that first one. I've not seen that yet. and I think that was a pretty real picture.. could very well be one of them.. although I'd think they'd say what model.. not GTX 200 series.. instead it should say GTX 280, or 260, and i think they even have a budget 240 comin.. I would not think it would say Series... but whatever.. cool, thanks for the info. they should be here before July.. wre should see them in the states around the 20th of June!

Well thats a great card.. but you might as well just get the regular 9800 GX2.. not the OCX version. all that is, is the overclocked "Extreme" edition. and you can do all that manually after you get the card.. I'd get the cheaper, not overclocked version. and OC it to where you find it meets ur needs most.. the OC'd versions are good, but the Extremely OC'd version tend to Push the max to much, and then you have no room to OC yourself.. so if you enjoy doing your own OC.. get the reg version. but if you don't wanna mess with that stuff.. get the OCX. but myself personally I like OC'ing the cards myself.. the advantage to that, is you can run it at stock speed while doing daily things.. wich will let the card run a lot cooler, and then just change the speeds with a saved Profile to a high decend OC.. only when you need it, like encoding, or right before starting a game.. that way it's only OC'd when it's truely needed.. make sense.. my card is stock speeds. and I crank it up.. then load Crysis, and then go have my Sniper fun..

Let me kno what you decide. I'm still tryin to decide what I wanna do also. I'm not going to pay $599 for the GTX 260, NO way, and I if anything would get the 280, but it's $649 (Or thats what Nvidia's recommending).

No way I'm doin that.. so I'm either going to sell my 8800 GTS 640MB for $200 bucks to some random guy that really wants it. and get for around the same price a newer 8800 GTS 512 with the new G92 chip.. cuz that would run better. and possibly SLI that.. I don't kno yet.. but those new cards are a lil much..

I have 2 MSI 9600 GTs in SLI. I originally only had enough for a single card, and then after the moment of getting it, I had enough to buy another. If I waited about 2 weeks I would've had enough to pool the money and get a single, kick ass 9800 GTX.


I'd recommend a 8800 GTS or GTX.

perennialartist... your better off with 2 9600 GT's in SLI than getting one 9800 GTX.. it only has 128 stream processors.. the 9600's have 96.. so 96x2 your at 192 and I bet it works pretty well.. that was ur best bet tog et 2 9600's in SLI.. and I've heard some pretty bad things about the 9800 GTX.. as it's basically the same as the 8800 GTX but Nvidia tryin to make more money. the 8800 GTX actually works better than the 9 series with Higher Resolutions, and in most categories the 8800 GTX performs just as good or better.

so either get a 8800 ULTRA, or stick with ur 9600's in SLI. I'm thinkin of getting 2 8800 GT 512 (G92) and SLI those.. or just waiting for new cards..
as I'd really LOVE to get that GTX 280
