HD Errors: Vista cannot recover

Well, just for kicks, I renamed the C:\Windows folder, and created a new one, copied from my wife's identical computer. This was all done running the UBCD4Win OS booted from my CD.

Of course, booting with the newly created folder did not work, either. But I had to satisfy my curiosity wondering whether that might work.

TY for your patience. I am home now and took my time with your thread. It appears, that based upon all that you have said you must consider the factory reinstall option.
You have all your stuff backed up, but, yes, you will lose your installed software and have to reinstall.
If you were able to boot from the Seven DVD, it would be the same, your programs would be lost.
Sometimes the factory reinstall is the only way to go, that is why it is there.
With the factory reinstall, it would be like day one, you have to download the SPs, settings, etc.

Well, after much hacking around, I finally gave up and did the factory restore. Followed by hours and hours of repeated Windows Updates to bring it up to Vista SP-1 status. Then upgraded to Windows 7.

So now I have a Windows-7 system with no apps loaded.

The Lobotomy is complete.

It now becomes my 6-year-old second grader's computer. :sa:

I think that you made a wise decision. I have Seven and have had Vista. Seven is awesome. Good luck to you.
