Help with vista please - D: Drive query

I am not worried about loosing anything or having to do a million updates - so I choose boot menu - priority - change and basically follow the prompts - I think I can cope with that. If I get wrong it will bleep at me anyway and I will bleep back. If I am not happy with that, then I do not have a problem with F8 and factory reset I have done this before.

Cheers for all of this....

 Well my boot menu isnt like the one you show and again i am lost: I do want to use my own discs:

On Esc this is what I see:
BOOT MENU
Select a boot first device
Hard Drive Group
-Ch3m
CDRom Group
Ch2m Hp DVD Writer 640

What should i highlight and then what. I have looked for tutorials and cannoy find any clues, but will keep looking.

Cheers now

 I have had a couple of days away from Laptops and Computers for a change. I had enough last week. I successfully got everything back to rights after using my discs and updating all the programs and updates etc. it takes hours and hours.

McAfee seems happy, I cannot understand how the virus got into the system in the first instance when McAfee is meant to be on continual red alert.

However, whilst things appear to be working well I have an issue now with a web page error with the little yellow triangle at the bottom: Is this an error on the webpage or an error on vista yet again?

HTML Parsing error. Unable to modify the parent container element before the child element is closed (KB927917).

I have no idea what it means or what I should be doing about it. I think I am getting very close to buying that gun............ Tell me it is nothing drastic for a change?

What browser are you using?
Make sure that you have at least IE8.
If using another browser, be sure it is the most up to date.

It should be OK with IE 8, if not post again and we will try to resolve the problem with some small adjustments.

Now, I can talk to you like one of the regulars. Start with a system restore point, then install IE9. If you do not like it, go back with the restore point.

You will be able to start giving help to others very soon LOL

:) Thank you, so far so good IE9 seems to be working perfectly. Thanks for the advice. I have 2 windows updates that keep refusing to run, stupid question no doubt, but could I try running them in safe mode?

Thank you everyone for all your help so far.

Without going back into updates I cannot remember exactly but they are both system based security updates. I can look after dinner if you want the exact info.....
You have no doubt gathered I am still a little nervous about what I should or should not do in safe mode. I know not to do the restores now, getting there slowly.
Thank you

Give this a try
For both Vista and Seven, set updater to notify not install
Windows Update Settings - Change - Windows 7 Forums
When you are notified, select only one update, then try to install. If it works try the next.
Dont do at the same time.
If that does not work, make sure that you should be getting those updates, are they really for your computer?
