Hmm. Dual Core help with Video Editing?

Good luck. Be careful putting it in and don't use too much thermal compound.

I have 3gb. Max for 32bit vista.

Been doing the same cleaning tasks for years, computer is running top notch. Thanks though!

FYI mathematically 2^32 = 4 gb however Widows 32-bit sometimes has trouble with that much. One consideration is how much your motherboard can handle however 3 gb is more than enough IMO.

Thanks. How much paste do you put on?

Although the finished surfaces (the top of the processor and the bottom of the heatsink) are machined to a fine finish, they are not perfectly smooth (although they appear to be to the eye). Examined under a microscope reveals the surfaces to be full of countless mountains and troughs. The purpose of TIM (Thermal Interface Material) is to fill these troughs and make a surface that is perfectly smooth. This is achieved by applying a very thin layer of the material to the top of the processor (don't use too much, or you'll end up with a heat insulator rather than a heat conductor). When the heatsink is then replaced (don't forget to connect the fan) and the system turned on, the heat from the processor causes the TIM to flow slightly and fill in all the microscopic gaps.

Thanks for the great explanation! I've read the correct amount to put is between a grain of rice and a pea. And spread it with a card?

Since the GPU uses part of the onboard memory, you can subtract up to .5 Gb from the 4. That's still plenty for doing HD work. I only have 4 Gb on this machine and I can handle all video editing. The only difference it makes is in how long it will take to encode files.

I'm trying to figure out how I posted in the middle of this discussion about thermal paste. Stuff is super expensive by the way.

Seems the best way is to put a dot or a small line and then just strap the heat sink on. Using a card creates air bubbles, correct?

Yup, like I said... Uncooked grain of rice.

On my hex cores, I like to put a smidgen les, than put small small dabs in the corners to look like a dies 5.

He redid it, but uses way too much paste:
How to Remove and Apply Thermal Compound [Updated Tutorial] - YouTube

If you use the proper amount, securing the heatsink will properly distribute the compound evenly over the chip.

I've done alot cpu/heatsink swaps in the last few weeks and the cpu and heatsink was properly and evenly spred.

Try this from ncix's linus
Installing Thermal Compound (NCIX Tech Tips #11) - YouTube

He gets it right usig 2 methods.

Great! Holiday messed up the shipping for the CPU, it should be in hopefully next Monday - Tuesday. In the picture he has 2 packets of thermal compound next to the CPU, hopefully it comes with some.

The cooler will be in today, I will post pictures up.

Hopefully.. if not its easily picked up.

What/where did you get the cooler from? a link would be best.. It might have it pre-applied.

Sucks waiting eh.

I ordered 7 tyhings, 5 different items, on the 2nd. The last 2 parts, the hsf's, just came in. EVERY part came seperately.

Ok. It came in. Where the processor meets the cooling system, there is a grey square of some thin grey goop - almost looks like a patch.. I imagine that's the thermal compound and i'm all set?
