Solved How do I use my recovery partion?

My PC came with a recovery partion and have now experienced some bugs which I think I got rid of, but the download of zone alarm won't uninstall. Their support didn't help any since my Gateway GT5668E is past warranty expiration, so I want to just recover my PC to factory default. The OS is Vista Home Premium.

Hello Advice Pro,

This link below from Gateway can help show you how to do a factory restore of your computer to reinstall Vista back like it was the day you first turned it on. Be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose first though.

I had a problem starting the process of recovering the system. After I press F8 & enter the Advanced Boot Options, choosing Repair your computer doesn't give me the System Recovery Options dialog box, but restarts my PC. I've gone through this process many times already.

Let's see if you may be able to use the Zone Alarm Removal Tool to uninstall Zone Alarm first to try and avoid a reinstall.

Yes, I know theog, but I'm not getting that. Could I access System Recovery Options or the restoration partion via Safe Mode with Command Prompt at Advanced Boot Options? Brink wrote in the 3rd post on this page:

"LOL yep, just fixing to add the Command Prompt option on here."


I can't find those instructions!

The 2 Gateway tutorials couldn't help me because:


  1. Repair Your Computer < Advanced Boot Options, boots into Vista instead of repairing.
  2. I don't have the Gateway Recovery Center.

Advice Pro,

Did you ever create a set of Factory Recovery Discs from your computer that you could use instead?

If not, then you may need to contact Gateway to get a replacement copy, or purchase a new copy of Vista. :(

At the Advanced Boot menu, I chose Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I got C:\Windows\system32, and I dont know how to get to the Start menu from there.

Choose SAFE MODE.
