IE9 Thoughts

OMG, I remember a time when there was a virus that created C:\Windows\System 32\ < Notice space and the program writer made a typo, and accidentally put C:\Windows\System32 into his database. Deleted his entire System32 folder. Ooops!

Thanks, Richard. That tutorial led me to another which was specifically for adding the menu bar in IE9 with a REG button. When I did it nothing happened. I opened a new window and still no menu bar. Then I closed all open Windows and opened a new IE window and there was my precious menu bar just where I wanted it. You've been given credit where credit is due as this was one of the items I missed the most between IE8 and IE9 and I very much appreciate getting it back and never thought to look for a tutorial as I assumed IE9 was too new for them to have created any yet - but they are right on top of things (as I should have realized by now).

Hi Lorien, I found this tutorial for the Menu Bar:
Always Show Menu Bar IE9 Beta - How-To Geek.

Would you mind sharing the tutorial that you found that worked for you? Also, for those folks who aren't aware of it, I understand that the Menu Bar pops up if you press Alt --- and then it autohides after you've used it. I want it on the screen at all times though, so I'm glad we can now get it back!

I like IE9 a lot so far. The interface is nice and light weight, the sharpness of the pictures is very crisp, and the speed seems very good as well.

I dont think comparing security is really a fair thing because its gonna be dependant on specific user settings and browsing habits, and the fact that IE is gonna be targeted the most. I would Imagine IE9 is comparable its competition.

I continue to use Chrome on my laptop but am switching to IE9 on the Desktop.

Hi Friend, how's it going?

This is what I used. I know it was in the W7 Forum but it was referenced in that other article and it worked just fine on my Vista system (see specs). Internet Explorer 9 - Turn Menu Bar Always On - Windows 7 Forums.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

I just tried it several more times and get the same problem (but I can see you obviously don't - dang it! - sorry, not wishing the problem on you but wishing everyone had it so it would get to the top of their list). I heard there's a compatibility setting somewhere here (not Vista's compatibility mode, but something for IE9 specifically) but I can't find where I read it or where it is. Any ideas?

Oh and instead of Microsoft Connect, here just click on the wheel to the far upper right and there's a send feedback link which is much better and easier to use (and gets it directly to the right people and can even take screenshots to see the problem occur).

I think the compatibility option is a button on the address bar. It looks like a torn piece of paper between the actual address and the refresh button and only seems to be present for sites the may require it.

Finally got around to posting back on here. I feel sorry for all of you having problems! Thank god it installed OK on my two systems; one with vista-64 (Laptop/ Main computer) and Windows 7-32. I think it is a good browser, but some things could be changed. First, I think they could have left the navigation buttons alone, they look ugly the way they are. Another thing that I dont like is that I have to right-click a tab to close it unless it is active. In Chrome, it's easier to close a tab because the "X" is on the tab. I also don't know if I like the tabs being right next to the address bar, it seems like it would be hard to navagate. And like someone before me mentioned, I like chrome's ability to drag a tab and make it into it's own window. I think that if Microsoft were to keep the current design, that would be needed.

Overall though, they did a good job on their new browser. They cleaned up the interface to make it easier to use, which I like. I hated firing up IE and seeing like 10 diffrerent tool bars, half of which came from nowhere. It gives you the option to disable add-ons and tool bars (maybe) at startup.

Good job so far Microsoft!

A suggestion I have is to have a spell checker like Chrome in IE9. I love that feature, it helps me not to look so stupid due to typing mistakes and grammar errors. It would also be cool if they developed a program like ad-block for IE.
Ad-block could be separate or combined within the browser like the popup blocker. If it were to be separate, they could make it free to users with Genuine Windows. I wouldn't mind paying a low, One time fee too. I would definitely prefer it to be free though.

IE9 seems to mostly work fine, but I'm still having a problem with text boxes (like the edit reason box in these message screens or the edit boxes in the system specifications screen in the user profile section - but not the message box here) where typing anything shuts down the tab and restarts it fresh - wiping out whatever I had done. But it doesn't happen all the time (I'd say 20-30% of the time). Nothing except rebooting will resolve the problem and then not every time then either - sometimes it takes 2 or maybe 3 restarts before the problem doesn't happen and then it's fine until I shutdown. I've already reported the problem so maybe Microsoft will be able to find out why an fix it in the next release.

I also downloaded Microsoft Essentials 2011 which replaced with Live Toolbar with the Bing Toolbar (there was no option in installation to avoid the Bing Toolbar if you wanted anything else). I'd be fine with it - it isn't much different in general but there is one major annoyance. You can't program the search box to open results in a new tab or even a new window - it only opens in the current tab. If you don't want to replace the page you're on with another page (like if you're typing a post and want to search for something but not lose what you've already typed), you need to first open a new tab and do the search from there. This is not convenient but there doesn't seem to be a setting to fix this. But I suspect this is more an issue with the toolbar than with IE9.

Though IE9 is an improvement, it's still among your worst options. Go with any other browser if you want the best experience.

Microsoft, we want complete HTML5 and CSS3 support, no less!

Well so far I'm having no problems running IE9, I like it, it's fast and it gives the window over to the web site rather than it take all the space.

I haven't missed the Menu bar not showing, after all it's only a click away when needed so I've left it like that I much prefer the cleaner look of the browser rather than it be cluttered with toolbars and such.

I've been rocking the x64 version for a week now, after installing x64 beta flash, and its been fine.

Had some issues in forums with replys, but clicking the compatibility button fixed it.

I like the cleanness, and the link bubble that shows up when hovering over a link.
