Incompatible Display Adapter

Just had a quick google for RADEON 9250 vista drivers, and it seems that ATI discontinued driver support on this model, so that would be why it's not installing.

Should be. Try downloading the driver again (make sure you get the Vista 32 bit one) and install again.

But wait! I may have just found a problem (please don't hate Vista or your computer). When I go through everything, I discover that the 9250 isn't one of the options under Vista 32-bit. Hmm...could this be the root of all evil? (Ah! z3r010 beat me to it and posted while I typed)

Let's assume that we can trick the computer, since it does seem to know what card it is. So, the problem might be with the driver download. If this one doesn't work, let's try a rollback to Catalyst 7.11 (Catalyst™ 7.11 Display Driver for Windows Vista (32 bit)).

I'll be off to dinner in a bit, so replies won't be as immediate. But I'll be back to do what I can to keep helping. This problem is interesting. Could be you'll need a newer card, though.

Well, the download from this location did the same thing - gave the big green checkmark, said installation was successful, rebooted...and it just isn't there.

Time to buy a new card? :-(

Seriously, thank you both A LOT for all your help today!

Yeah. Probably a good option. Though I am surprised it wouldn't tell you there wasn't a compatible piece of hardware. Mysterious, since I know I've seen that error before.

Let me know if you need any advice on cards and you want to stick with ATI (I'm one of the few ATI people here, I think). Basic information that would be useful would be stuff like what you want to do with it (gaming and the like, for instance) and how much you want to spend. Also, what type of slot it needs to go into (AGP, PCI-E, PCI).

Thanks - I'll take that offer! I am only using this machine for work - so spreadsheets, e-mail, word processing, and occasional web surfing. No video, no gaming, no intense graphics. Yeah, my life is pretty boring :-D
This card is a 32-bit PCI, and I also have an AGP available. I'm most interested in cheap instead of performance. I am close to a Micro Center so I may see if they have any deals.
Thank you again!

^You can buy cards with Dual DVI.
usually they come with their own DVI->VGA adapter (in the box) so you can use 1 VGA and 1 DVI.

Well, shooting for low price and limited to those slots, we end up in a kind of odd territory. If you had a PCI-E available, I could actually find better prices. I also added the requirement that support be around for some time on the card (this knocked out the 9k series cards). The X1550 seemed to get respectable treatment, so I think it'll last you some amount of time and work quite nicely.

Here's an example of one for you: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100182L Radeon X1550 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
I like Sapphire and HIS as ATI brands. Some people hate them, others love them. Shop around and see what you like.

Well, given the cheap nature of the PC itself, not surprising that upgrades will cost a little more - but this example will work fine for me.

I really do thank you for all your help today!
